Why the 1000RR? Its a superbike and it's a Honda. We had a free will choice to go for any superbike that wanted. Hondas are known for reliability and smoothness. Also the 1000RR Fireblade was amongst the best road bikes availaible in world. Besides that Sunny, who was supposed to ride the superbike in the GIR has an inclination towards the 1000RRs looks. According to him it is a graceful looking machine with an ultrasharp profile.
But like as we said, we could choose any superbike, we did approach Yamaha India to give us some options of association the GIR. Sunny even got two top Yamaha officials to talk to him and explained the GIR concept much before it was final. Unfortunately, the Officials ignored his idea and mocked at Sunny for it. It was good luck for us because we were free of any contracts with a company for a superbikes and endorsed the Honda Fireblade without any influence from the Honda company. Yamaha's loss our gain. At this point of time I recalled Long Way Round and how KTM rjected the proposal of taking their two bikes around the world just because hey feared they would fail. BMW took the opportunity though and rest is history...
We took the FireBlade all around India, through various terrains, shooting it in exoic locations and taking it where nobody had every taken a superbike before. From Kanyakumari to Dhanushkodi, from tea gardens of Munnar to villages with no roads. It was also the star of the trip. Hundreds of xBhpians and biking enthusiasts got their pictures clicked and felt a superbike fo the first time in their lives. We had taken the Superbike to the masses like never before. There were no attitudes about owning such a machine and anyone coud touch and feel it without being afraid of being verbaly abused by either one of us.
Once we all dreamed of seing a superbike and in this trip we were actually helping thousands to make a small dream of their's a reality. We felt good.
The performance of the FireBlade is legendary. It has a rich legacy. The smooth hum of the underseat exhaust was a pleaure to hear on long rides. The longest ride that we did on the Blade was ~820kms in a single day from Chennai to Hyderabad. This was called the ride of his life by Sunny. 100 Kmph in 3 seconds and cruising at 150kmph was no problem for the bike. The braking was top notch and there was not even a single accident with the 1000RR in the GIR. This was also the only two wheeler in the 5 bikes cavalcade which did not have to be hauled into our backup truck due to any technical or mechanical problems. And thats 13,000kms of trouble free riding. Splendid.
