Eating and Living on The Great Indian Roadtrip

Like all our elders say, 'Dont eat outside, you will fall sick!'. I guess we didnt have a choice did we. All of us except Sunil Gupta were foodies on the trip with Ken and GasolineJunkie creating new records. For a 108 dys we had to eat outside. The routine? Get up in the morning, if its a long ride today then pack bags and start riding and then take a break somewhere on the highway for a breakfast. Start riding again. Stop for lunch on any decent place one can find. Then start riding again. Reach the destination for the day, unpack, get fresh and eat dinner. This whole routine would be interspersed with a lot of mineral water of course.

There were a few things that we noticed along the way as far as eating went:

  • There are plenty of highway dhabhas in north India. We could ride on without worrying about locating a dhabha lest the next one be hundred miles away
  • In the south the roadside dhabhas were extremely scarce. We once road from Chennai to Vijaywada without finding a decent dhabha, perhaps we missed them, but the point is that they are very scarce in south India.
  • Always take Mineral water, it doesnt matter if its not a known brand, at least psychologically you will be convinced that you have been taking the right water.
  • Somewhere near Mangalore Sunny decided to keep a small backpack with a waterbottle in it. Finding mineral water in the middle of highways down south was a lucky deal.

Sometimes we even had to live on sweets as our lunch. This too happened only down south. Rest of India, there were decent dhabhas where we had no language problem and could have a decent rice meal. Manya times we would have our lunch when many would have a high tea. So there you go that was a whole of eating summarized in very few words.

Eating was not a very big problem as finding a place to stay overnight. Specially in the Leg 2 of the trip when we had the 1000RR and the Jupiter. It was known and experienced fact that through many of the roads that we had taken, this was the first time exotic two wheelers like these were travelling. Even in highly developed cities like Bangalore and Delhi ther craze and the rarity of these kind of bikes is so great that it wont be too far from calling it a traffic stopper.

Any city that we went, we first looked for parking inside the hotel premises. Sometimes it would cost us a few more but it was all worth it considering the bikes came back safe and sound. But even the security guard and the hotel staff would caress and take walking rounds of the bike checking out every possible corner of the bikes.

Reliance A1 Plazas were a boon to us. They provide a good range of services and food. Many of them were in construction
so their network will only get better.

We also spent a night in a Reliance A1 place dorm in Farakka because there was no hotel in sight until Malda which
was a good deal away.

Thats Sunny having ice cream falooda in Agra.

We did not expect such a good hotel to have our lunch in Belgaum in the south.

Our hotel room in Chandigarh.
