You may as well add this info to the original post as it is VERY MUCH required for a long drive (many states).

FYI, In southern states (Karnataka/TN/Kerala or AP) I have never been fined for NOT having Original docs.
Hey veda,

I have been born and brought up in pune and have toured like hell in Maharashtra.. its always better to carry the originals as they will always ask you for one.Original RC book / Original License is a must .If not original atleast the papers should be attested by a notary or something ( with a stamp and signature on it ) And better keep a copy in the bike and keep the originals in the bag just incase the bike gets stolen.I have a friend who is a RTO inspector in Pune.I had asked him regarding keeping copies of papers in the bike he suggested me to keep the originals so that there will never be cop trouble. Till date when ever i go out of bangalore i keep the originals with me. in the city i use the copy.

And one more thing i dont get the funda of taking a copy of the DL during tours ? whats the funda? Dont you think its illogical ? its like having a copy of a company's identity card don't you think it will look like a fake one.
