keeping tabs on the fuel consumption of ANY vehicle is a great way to get an early indication of problems. i remember my rd returning like 7kmpl even under normal riding. i knew something was very wrong and thought the milkman (!) was stealing petrol. a few early morning vigils at the window put paid to that theory. a close inspection of the bike revealed a very slow leak under the fuel tank. it wasnt even a drip, just kinda oozing fuel. and there weren't any visible marks under the bike or elsewhere. if i wasn't keeping tabs on the mileage i would never have found the leak. would have just kept filling the tank and cursing my bike for it's exceptionally poor mileage.
