Royal Enfield used to produce diesel bullets called Taurus. You'll find them in the rurals around Coimbatore and Harayana. The engines were Greaves engines, and much of everything else was directly from the Bullet.

We had 2 of them at home. My dad and his twin brother. one each.
Both were sold off at a later stage...
I've ridden them, God they vibrate like crazy and trust me they will definitely make me impotent.
But the mileage was so so high...!!!

The tech involved in modern diesel like the common rail direct injection is quite expensive, however with series production it cam be brought down.
A 500cc diesel with a turbo and common rail injection is easily capable of over 50bhp. Thats already 100bhp/ltr. And they'll produce enough torque to scare you.

dear joel,
that some good technical thinking, i was rather thinking of 300cc 15-30 hp coupled with a turbo

Enfield had a mono pod diesel that made a little less power than the luna. Since your an engine fanatic I’m sure you know that they run 20+:1 compression ratio so they’d have to be built strong and that combined with expensive fuel injection systems would total a pricetag no sensible consumer would be willing to accept. No disrespect but..I see a few words like powerful and nimble

dear gasolinejunkie,
seems ur unaware of current market trends

. r&d are developing at a thunderous rate in our country

. diesel engines rules indian markets, hope u r not aware of that too

bajaj, tvs or yamaha are not people who started to sell bikes just from few months back , they r in this field for more than few decades. thay have a strong r&d team and they have the potent to do so . thier potent is totally destroyed only by the conventional customers who dont want any new technology or still not yet came out of an pre-independence era
thanks,
