Well as per this quote it doenst have any handshaking relation.....but there is a co-relation.......as many teeths your Rear Sprocket has......the Piston has to work hard if the rear sprocket teeths increase in number as so the stress will happen in the engine....and also gear shifting will also get varied a little bit.....
