well thought of Technocrat. But an Iron rod and chilli pwder wont help, cause in MP and UP when u r attacked, ur attcked by minimum 5-6 guys and not one. one wrong move can mean death, or a slit on the chest or a burnt bike. A gun is the best option.
When I go for trips more than 500ks I patch a Rs500 note on my chest with a medical tape. In case of a robbery, one should have enough money to reach back home.
