Lightbulb Air Powered Motorcycle!!!

Though it will take some time before this can be made available commercially, the day is not far when gasoline and other traditional fuels will be replaced by air.

The Recent issue of Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy said that compressed air cylinders can generate enough power to run a motorcycle for up to 40 minutes. It goes without saying that with modifications, the power of compressed air cylinders can be increased.

Developing countries like India depend heavily on bikes and other means of transportation that can be used in rural areas. Apart from being economical mode of transportation, an air compressed motorcycle would cause less emission. Though some technical modifications are required for this engine before it can be produced on mass scale, it will definitely be a more eco-frienly and economical mode of transportation.

How an Air Powered Motorcycle works

Compressed air is stored in air tanks which are connected to rotary air engines that can rotate the rear wheels. Any tank can be used but a carbon fiber tanks are usually considered best for this purpose. An advantage of using compressed air over batteries is that it can be recharged instantly. Though air is available in unlimited supply, compressor needs electricity which must be easily available for refilling. Air filling stations are required for this purpose which may charge a nominal amount for each refill.

Major challenges for air compressor based motorcycle

The size of the tank for compressed air is a major challenge because you cannot carry a huge amount of air all the time. In its present form you may need to stop every 25-30 to recharge your bike which is very inconvenient. Moreover the highest speed of this kind of motorcycle is not more than 30 kmph. In its present form it can be used for short commutes. However its utility would be enhanced if it came with a pedal power as an option.

Ever heard of Air Powered Motorcycle? ? It is a reality now
