Default Buying Advice sought: Hardtail mountain bike

My requirement for a new bike:
1. Hard Tail
2. Disks at the front for downhill stopping power & in wet weather.
I could fit aftermarket, if the mounting provision is available. so V brakes are ok.
3. Light weight: I'll be doing lot of hill climbing in Coorg, Nandi hills, Kodachadri... ; maybe Nilgiris & Leh too ! .
I dont mind a steel or Al frame.
4. Easy & economical availability of spares.
5. I won't be upgrading in the near future (distant too). So it's got to be a good build.

My work place is 5 kms from home. I could save that 40m at the gym. Its not just me, it's 3 more buddys jumping in! Same bike for all of us.

My height: 5'8. So what would be the appro frame size.
---------
I've shortlisted :
Decathlon Rockrider 5.2 - good enough
Firefox Viper - was told quality varies from unit to unit.
---------
How are Suncross, LA, Haro Flightline Sport (looks yummy ), Schwinn, Raleigh. Havn't checked their models yet.
Trek & Merida - out of bound .

Thanks,
Kaveriappa
Note: I'm from Bengaluru.

Shelved my buying plans until June. I'm going for an Indian make bike, for starters. The last I cycled was 8 years ago. Had a single speed Hercules MTB, & what a beating it took.

Edit: 12:19 AM 5/7/2009
Got a Hero Thunder Racer on 3rd May. After flexing the gray cells on MTBs, ended up buying a roadbike, considering long distance riding. The videsi road bikes were yummy, but are in the upper limits of 25k INR.

Hi,
I own a Merida TFS XC 400D. Its an amazing bike with good components. Comes with the shimano Deore 27 speed combo. Both the brakes are hydraulic disc - Hayes Ryder. Comes with original Merida TFS tyres. It costed me 43K & got it from Venky's.
