Default Cutting of trees in the Forest for planting Rubber

I am a regular guy in the western ghats .And this time i was completely shocked. Close to 3-4 acres of land deep in the reserve forest was chopped down for rubber plantations . Close to 30-35 huge trees were cut down for this.I asked the person who was getting all this done. The answer i got "We are not able to produce more rubber with our existing trees so we are planting more rubber trees . After 7 years we will get good yield".

Most of the places in Coorg / Sampaje / Puttur / Kerala produce rubber and people have become so self centered that they have started cutting down the forest for planting trees .Many places in kerala you can see only rubber trees everywhere."Gods own country" has more of rubber trees then native species. There is nothing called as a forest now.As the demand of rubber is going high more and trees are cut down to grow rubber .

The temperature of these places is just rising . Sampaje ghats use to be like a freezer during rains. Now its warm. People just don't understand that cutting age old trees will effect the balance of the forest.

Simple scenario

Rider 1 : I used 2 sets of tires on the track last weekend.
Rider 2 : Wow!!

Did the rider ever think from where the tires came ? how was it made where did the raw material come from ??

What am i doing from my side?I have a set of friends who plant native tree samplings, if the land is provided. All my friends in the western ghats have offered land for planting trees and have agreed to take care of the plants and trees.

What can you do ?
If anyone of you have some open land which is not in use i would suggest you also start planting native species of trees of your area and take care of it until it grows big.Its a time consuming process but it will help a lot in the near future. Native species require basic care only till they start growing . Once they grow up to 6-8ft they can be left on their own.

There are many organizations which take 1000rs for one tree .What they do is plant a tree on your name and they take care of it until it grows big . They send regular updates regarding the progress of the tree. And they make sure that the tree is taken care of. If anyone is willing to sponsor a tree. I would suggest you mail Mr. Prasad Seshadri on livewithtrees@yahoo.com . He will send all the details.

PS. I am not a good writer but i hope you guys got my message .

Pour in your comments / thoughts .

Like who cares!!! We have seen total breakdown of talks and negotiations from the developed nations from the Kyoto protocol essentially the US who produces over a quarter of the entire green house gases of the planet and wants developing nations and 3rd world countries to stop production!!! We are at the receiving end.

Unending debate.

I don't own any such place where such planting of trees can be done.

But if you have some plans about raising awareness, etc about this I can definitely help out in that respect.
