Default Motocross rider dies on track

Bengalooru : The motocross fraternity in the city was left disturbed and shaken by the death of H E Anil Kumar, who succumbed to injuries sustained in a national-level event held in Coimbatore over the weekend. Kumar, 26, was severely injured when he lost control of his bike while negotiating a tabletop jump during a moto. He fell on the handle of his bike, severely injuring his liver. He was rushed to a hospital, but passed away there, four days later.

Anil was initiated into motoracing by his godfather, Gangadhar at the age of 20 years. He discontinued his studies — he was pursuing a diploma in mechanical engineering — and began participating in racing events across the state, using his own Yamaha RX 100. He also opened a garage ‘FMW Racing Garage’ where he “souped up” and repaired his bike.

“He used to practice for hours on end to become a professional racer,” Gangadhar told Bangalore Mirror. “He was a fantastic rider and had great ambition and dedication. He had a dream to make it big in this field.”

Anil soon became a force to contend with and caught the eye of TVS Racing officials who roped him in. In the span of a season, he became one of their top riders.

This year, he was given the opportunity to participate in the MRF Super Cross championship — a six-leg event across the country — and had sparkled in the first round in Bangalore on May 15, emerging the winner in his category. He had hoped for a similar showing in the Coimbatore leg of the championship, but fate reckoned otherwise. Doctors at the hospital battled hard to save him, but his friends say his liver was too badly damaged. He died on Thursday and his body was brought to his home in the city in the early hours on Friday.

His parents, Eshvar and Suvarna, and his younger brother Sunil Kumar are still shocked and are yet to come to terms with his death.

“For us it seems as if he’s away, participating in a race,” his father said. “We feel as if he would be back with another trophy as he had been doing these past five years. It’s hard to come to terms with this loss. We had planned to get him married soon.”

His teammates and friends, who were in full attendance at his funeral on Friday, paid rich tribute. “He was a brilliant rider and a terrific human being”, was the common refrain.

Deaths in motocross events are thankfully rare, but for the Kumars and Anil’s friends, its just one too many.
