I wont call myself a Nikon Guy, it's just that i have grown up in photography with a Nikon and i'm more comfotable with it.
And i have serious plans of buying either a 'Blad' or a Mamiya sometime in near future so i'm just a photographer with Nikon gear!!

I would never suggest someone a Nikon just because i use or like Nikon.

Intial enthusiasm = Drool factor (it was a new feature).

It does come handy in situations (Ad shots/Astro photography) where precise focus is of prime importance and that too on a tripod (preferably)

And moreover Liveview in 1000D is not the same as it is in D300 or Canon's higher end models.

Infact ideally i wud suggest him a D40 it's a perfect learners camera. It is a D60 minus the extra megapixels which he is not gonna need unless he want to make huge prints!!

My bad. I thought you were a Nikon guy. Coz I remember having a shot of yours somewhere holding a Canon and you distinctly saying, "Me holding a Canon, unbelievable!"

Me too would have loved to do that, discuss it even, but then that is not within the purview of this thread I guess...

Can you tell us if you can focus with Live View on? I think that one has to manual focus with Live View.

What does that mean not the same? You mean the quality of image on the screen?

You probably have a HUGE point there. Just that no one has raised this point earlier.

That's true because it does not make sense to switch over to Canon unless Canon does something unbelievable. Infact i kinda enjoy the 'cold war'. So if i 'have' to choose sides i wud choose Nikon anyday, afterall they helped me learn photography with their dirt cheap FM10, how can i ditch them at a major juncture like this (where photography is taking a giant leap)

It's best to manual focus so that one can maintain 'critical focus'.

That's one of the biggest points, ask Aryan he is always looking at my cam's screen and saying,"Awesome screen man" + the screen does not go black while zooming in!!

Megapixels are just marketing gimmicks in my opinion.

I just went ahead and bought a mint condition D70S (and 18-70 mm lens).

After spending time with various entry level and midrange bodies, I had realized that I really didn't want to give up the extra control offered by the dedicated buttons, top display etc. Was just walking around looking at used camera shops and boom! There it was, as good as new. not even a scratch. Close inspection and some bargaining ensued and before I could think twice, I bought it.

It's the most spontanious thing I have done in a long long time!

Hey Silver, what did you get in the end?

I got myself a D60 in March and am totally in love with it. The deal was pretty ok.

For Rs.36k I got,

1. D60 Body + Nikon neck Strap
2. 18-55VR kit lens
3. Sigma 70-300 non APO lens
4. Plain filters + Hoods for lenses
5. Camera bag that holds body + 18-55 + 70-300(and now even a Nikon 50mm 1.8D which I picked up recently)

Buying a Canon or Nikon or any other brand is like buying into a System. If you pick a Nikon, you become a part of the Nikon System. No DSLR is bad. They are all amazing piece of electronics. The difference lies in the photographer's hands, imagination, skill and love for Photography. Its very important for the Camera to be an extension of the photographer's hand.

I would suggest, for a start, get a simple equipment, because you will not have much idea, as to what your taste really is, get used to the camera and then slowly build on it.

Do let us know what you picked. All the Best.
