Cool Changing Backlight Colour of LCD Speedo Console: Pulsar

Greetings to all.

Lately there have been many questions being asked about changing the backlit colour of LCD consoles. It was also one of initial idea modding, about 3 years back. Finally I decided to take the risk of altering a 3K worth Unit!

I decided to put up the thread in Desi Bike section, simply because we can discuss here, share ideas and can help each other in modding other bike's console.

Also Note: It's not advisable for a normal user to tinker with the cosole, unless you are ready to take the risk or very proficient and confident with your fine soldering skills.

So here we go.

Step 1:

The First and foremost step is to remove the unit from the bike. Detach the wiring from the back of the unit, and remove the screws marked in red.

Step 2:

Now, after removing the cover. Remove the screws of the (1) face plate. (2) Pull the Tacho Needle straight and (3) Push Button Plastic Link

Step 3:

You can see in the picture, three parts of console you are left with.

Step 4:

Turn back the PCB LCD Unit.

This one of the most crucial part. You need to carefully De-solder the LCD points from the PCB Unit. It's important that each and every single point is absolutely free (check with the twizeers that every point is freely moving.

Remove the LCD Panel. Even a slight extra force can damage the LCD unit, so be careful.

Step 5

After removal of LCD Panel Unit-

(1) Red Area Marked LEDs are the backlit for LCD.
(2) Blue Colour Marked LEDs are for the Tacho Unit.
(3) Green Marked LEDs are for the needle and Over Rev/Low Fuel Indicators (meant to untouched)

Step 6:

Attach a 12V supply to the PCB to check the functioning of the LEDs (before and After changing of LEDs

Note: Different version of Speedo Consoles have different setups.

Step 7:

Here Comes the most important part.

There are two ways to change the backlit.
(1) De-Solder the existing LEDS and replace them with your preferred colour.
However from experience I found out that even little heat damaged the PCB. After replacing the LED, only few of the replaced ones got lit.

I double checked it and found the solder to be fine, but for some unknown reason some were not glowing. So next step was for "The Great Indain Juggad"

(2) Remove the existing LEDs and paste strips of LED. These Strips have resistors inbuilt to work with 12Vs and paste over the PCB area.

Note the removed LEDs on the Picture

Step 8:

If you are successful to change the LEDs than you are done. But with the Jugaad method, you need to connect the wires to draw power when the back-lit is supposed to be on.

The points on PCB back of the Socket, are points where it's supposed to be soldered.

Step 9:

Results:

Cost Involved?

1 Meter Strip of LEDs : 300 Rs. (The minimum i got from wholesale dealers)

Tools?
Screwdrivers, Soldering Iron, Solder,Flux De-soldering Pump and wick and wires.

Edit:

For warranty conscious people, thanks to Omi's idea :

We can stick Black tape on existing LEDs and install the new LED strips separately.

@Rahul: This is precisely what I wanted to ask you in the P220 thread, and this is what me and Coffin_On_Wheels were talking about this morning, on the thread. Looks good, but this is too big a risk to be taken for someone like me, who cannot even make out the different soldering points, et al!

However, that cool blue looks pretty soothing to the eyes, nonetheless.

Same here, will have to make a road trip to Bangalore to have Rahul's assistance in this.
I didnt know that the instrument console is worth 3k, will think many times before doing this.

In the meanwhile would try to find someone who agrees to do this or is capable of doing this.
Anyone has a damaged speedo console with him, wanna give a try.

Nice tutorial

BTW the rpm meter looks a bit dull

Are the strips readymade?
are there diff colors in those strips

Another Idea

If we are anyway going to put strips of led
can we not just paint/cover the existing led's with a black electric tape?
and then put those strips over em?

This will stop the light from the orange led

This way the de-soldering thing will be gone and most can do the rest job!

and you will always have 2 options

EDIT:
and if this is possible WARRANTY will also not VOID!

AND again a GREAT tutorial
was waiting for it since you mentioned it!
i always wanted WHITE for the console

ok gave it a brief thought to what has been actually done
and as per my existing knowledge is concerned [i am a student in 12th :P]
if a black electric tape can stop the orange light, the New led strip can be pasted over them
w/o any void of warranty

Rahul are we removing the orange led's in this process or we are just cutting off the power supply to them?

Omi, you just took words out my mouth

Before switching on my PC, I was thinking just the same, we can put black tape to cover the existing LED.. without voiding warranty!

In my case I have just removed the existing LEDs.

The Strips are ready made, and come in different colours, including White and Green!

Aryan, I think Omi in the above post has the right solution for the non-techies out there. And it won't void the warranty also.

Blue is good, but now I feel it's little too bright for comfortable night riding!

I first worked on a damaged console, and later on my 220s console.
