Thumbs up DIY GPS - Using Car GPS PND on Motorbike.

I am starting this thread to know anyone using car GPS PND (Personal Navigation Device) on your bike. If anyone then post your detail here that how r using it. Few month MapmyIndia launches a bike PND which comes with India map with a helmet costs around 18-19K, Which is very expensive. Then a idea comes in my mind that I can use Car GPS in bike but there are several factors which limit the use of Car PND on your bike were:

1. Battery backup of GPS.
2. Fixing the GPS with it Car mount on Bike was risky it may fall down.
3. The shock and vibration factor of bike may harm GPS.
But anyway I plan to have this experiment to see and I am posting all the details here.

Firstly I brought a new Chinese GPS from DX @US$ 101.17. Firstly I installed the map and make my GPS ready for any trip and check it is working properly or not.

Then I went to car spare parts store and brought a car cigerate lighter socket @ Rs. 90/-

With the help of a local garage mechanic here I manage to fit the cigerate lighter socket on my RTR 160. He charge me Rs. 50/- (Inclusive the materials provided by him like Clamps on which the socket is fitted + a fuse with fusebox.) It is connected with ignition key switch so when the ignition is off then no power in socket.

diy-gps-using-car-gps-pnd-motorbike-azjk75.jpg

It is fitted successfully then I test its voltage with the multimeter and it was working perfectly. Then I put the car charger into it and yahoo... its power light glows. Put other end in GPS and it start charging perfectly.

Now the main thing was fitting the GPS with the Bike. I found out this area (Red Border area in pic)will be perfect for it.
diy-gps-using-car-gps-pnd-motorbike-97mzow.jpg

Then I went to the bag maker shop and showed then my GPS and asked them to make a bag for it but have some extra space inside bag so I can put extra foam or sponge inside the bag and then put GPS inside it. Its one side would have transparent strong plastic so I can see the screen. And on the back side of the bag there should be a velco strip and a ring on top and a belt so when I remove it from bike it can wear it in my waist. made of full waterproof materials. He made the bag ready in 40 mins in front of me and it was perfectly as I asked him so I tipped him Rs. 20/- + Bag charge Rs. 70/- Total = Rs. 90/-

Front of Bag:
diy-gps-using-car-gps-pnd-motorbike-13ydqwk.jpg

Extra Foam inside back side of Bag.
diy-gps-using-car-gps-pnd-motorbike-23u6bds.jpg

Backside of bag with velco strip:
diy-gps-using-car-gps-pnd-motorbike-2bthj8.jpg

Then I put other parts of velco strip on the bike with the help of Fevi Quick.
diy-gps-using-car-gps-pnd-motorbike-f1gs91.jpg

And put the GPS inside the bag.

diy-gps-using-car-gps-pnd-motorbike-6paq0i.jpg
diy-gps-using-car-gps-pnd-motorbike-1z7qmv.jpg

Now, I just place the bag on the bike just over the velco strip. For extra security measure the waist belt is also locked around handle and the top ring just put over the ignition key hole and put key inside the bike. So in case of loose contact with Velco the key will first stop the GPS to fall down and waist belt is secondary.

diy-gps-using-car-gps-pnd-motorbike-wipx86.jpg

I test ride it approx 100 kms now. with varying speed upto 80 kmph. Tested also on bad road with hole like gutter and all the test are passed successful. In sun bright daylight I have to use its brightness to full level and it become little difficult to see but not too difficult. The FM transmitter transmit the voice over FM mobile set guiding the route. I continously used it for more 2 hrs on with charger. It was hot (lack of air circulation inside the back) when it when I remove it from bike.

Total costs:
GPS: US$ 101.17 = Rs. 4600/- Approx
Cigerate lighter Socket = Rs. 90/-
Mechanic charge = Rs. 50/-
Bag Total cost = Rs. 90/-
Feviquick = Rs. 20/-
--------------------------------------
Total = Rs. 4850/-
=============================

Is there anyone using Car GPS with bike. Then please share your idea here with us. If Anyone has any question then they can ask in this forum.

really nice,
Is this bag weather proof?. Can we wire two cigarette chargers?. One for phone and one for GPS?. I am planning to fix my phone like this as i got gps in-built. Once my internals are over I'll make a bag with strong magnets as I don't have enough space to securely fix the phone on handlebar in my p220. I am planning to fix the bag on the tank just like a tank bag. All this will be done in may .

EDIT: Is that velco strip on handle bar is removable?. . .i guess no as fevi quick is used. So what if in some time you plan to change that?. . .it would not look good without the gps bag. . .can you use the same bag for other purposes?. . .or make a biger bag for other purposes like carrying one or two notebooks?. Will weight on handle bar cause any kind of problems?

Well the result of the waterproof test is here. Its not 100% waterproof just because of zip chain only. The fabric and the transparent layer used to built it is 100% waterproof. I test it in bathroom shower for one min in full shower speed and then check inside. I found some trace of water inside that goes inside from zip part of the bag but the rest material is good. The fabric used to make bag has plastic like thing coated from inside so no entrance of water from there. So in case of heavy rain I will put the GPS device in plastic and tape it then pack in bag.

One more factor which cause harm to the device is dirt & dust on the road. So this bag has good build quality and well pack of the GPS unit and prevent it from dirt & dust which is more likely to be on roadside on biking and attacking the device every second.

You can get 1:2 cigarette socket in the market which u just put in single socket it will divide into 2.

Example:
DealExtreme: $5.74 Translucent 1-to-3 Cigarrete Socket Power Splitter with USB Port
DealExtreme: $4.20 1-to-3 Car Cigarette Lighter Power Port Splitter
DealExtreme: $5.32 2-Socket Car Cigarette Power Splitter with 2 * 1000mA USB Ports

DealExtreme: $4.59 1-to-2 Cigarette Lighter Socket Splitter and Extender
DealExtreme: $4.54 Car Dc 12V 1-TO-3 Power Adapter Splitter

Congrat man, Nice to see it. Does your deice has voice guidance system? So u wont have to look up the screen again and again. Only look once when voice guidance tell u to make turn.

Aditionally Bluetooth features make this device double working gadget. It work as bluetooth handsfree so when there is a call when you are riding the GPS screen will pop up with Called ID and ring. You can reply or reject call directly from the device.

if u got gps in your phone then why you need 2 cigarette chargers?
well i also planned to fix my n95 on my 220 but it is not possible to see the route in daylight as the visibility is not that high in day...

maybe it is because i planned it on the handle bar....
will give it try on tank in few days....

No Velco Strip is not removable. When I will want to change it I will just remove it with the help of knife. Yes it can be used to keep anything that can fit inside this bag. Like mobile phone etc. Keep mobile phone inside it and charge it so when u finish trip the mobile has full battery charge.

I dont think Laptop bag is good idea for bike as laptop is big and has its own weight and it can damage its internal parts during jerking of bike in any big hole on Indian road. Waight on handlebar is not a big issue but sophisticated parts of notebook is the issue. If you bag is strong enough and has good layer of sponge to absorb the weight then it should work.

@ sak8
Actually last year when I was new with my bike on delhi roads, I used my GPS extensively. I used to keep it in pocket and listen to it through headphones. Then never really got any chance to use it because those were the days when nokia and navteq were still developing the maps for India and only 4 metros were included in their service. But now the situation has changed and PAN-India is now included. I'm planning to fix it just above the tank pad or above the fuel cap. I really want to do many tweaks in my beast to customize it. And the two cigarette chargers will never harm . Its good to have a backup. I guess n95 doesn't adjust to brightness automatically. So, increase to brightness to maximum make it easily visible in the sun.

@ Snow

thanks mate for the solutions. You can always use waterproof zips available in market, and for the heating issues and the dust i can suggest make flaps on the side of the bag with using zips and inside place a thin cloth. like momy's chunni ...and during heavy rain you can zip the flap back to its place. Make sure you keep some ventilation in the bottom as air supply is very important. . I hope it helps.

I was talking about college notebooks. Made of paper .

For Air Passage as well as charger passge I keep almost 2.5 inch gap between 2 zip and tie 2 zip with a wire so it wont open further due to jerking of bike. So from that 2.5 inc vent it is small air passage and cherger point goes inside.

About notebook LOL hahahaha. I tought Laptop so I replied that way. Notebook carrying isnt a big deal.
