Did a round trip of 505 KM in 15 hours on Ninja. Even in terms of roads, it was riches to ruins.
CEO Pierer had recently announced that Husqvarna will stop production at their Italian plant and also that no more road bikes will be produced by the Swedish Marque.

In a Press Release, Husaberg has stated that the two companies will be merged into one at the current plant in Mattighofen, Austria and will be using the technology that has been developed by Husaberg. Most probably it will mean the brand of Husqvarna will be used, while that of Husaberg will be suppressed. Husaberg was an off-shoot of Husqvarna after it was acquired by Cagiva.

The new company will be called Husqvarna Sportmotorcycle GmBH. New models will be rolling out by the end of this year at the EICMA.
A pic of us in '94

I've had a tremendous desire to restore a KB for some time . Unfortunately I was not able to find a suitable bike . My patience paid off , as now we've got our hands on a 1986 KB100 . It was previously owned by a good friend of my father . I am going to restore this bike . This will be a DIY project , so I will be needing a lot of advice from the experienced members here . More so because I have never done anything like this before and I only have my college vacations ( One month ) to complete this project .

Wish me luck !!!

Suzuki Inazuma: The Time Machine
I was very excited to learn many months ago of Suzuki coming out with a new 250. I was thinking of something on the lines of a mini GSXR and the B-King to cater to the faired and naked enthusiasts respectively ala Yamaha’s R15 and FZ16.
Then the images of the first bike started to roll out on the web. Not everyone was sure is this would be the actual 250 or just a photoshopped image, but everyone knew it would be a naked and everyone wished that it would look like the BKing production, if not the concept.

BKing concept as showcased in 2001

What actually came out as a production bike in 2007

And the Inazuma GW 250S, the faired version of the IZ250

Rewind a little bit and some of you might know that the original B King concept was the one which attracted most Oohs and Aahs when Suzuki first showcased in 2001. It looked like it meant business and gave the word ‘streetfighter’ a visual synonym in the world of motorcycles.

By the time the bike was actually brought into production, it lost its appeal due to some subtle and very obvious design philosophy changes. A concept is always appreciated by its looks first rather than the assumed performance since no one can actually ride and test it. Companies look at the positive feedback and they all forget about this basic fact.

The sales of the BKing were a disaster, much like Yamaha’s MT-01. However the bike was fantastic. Having ridden it extensively around NZ in 2010, I can vouch for its brutal power and handling. But that wasn’t enough for people to shell out the money.
Five years since the launch of the production BKing, the Suzuki Inazuma 250 was unveiled. And most people went – Facepalm! There was just one question ‘Why couldn’t Suzuki just make the bike look like the BKing concept, or at least the BKing production bike’.
Inazuma means ‘lightning’ and there was a Suzuki Inazuma 750 as well, but it looks nothing like what they have done with the 250.

Inazuma 750

Looks
No matter how hard I try, I cannot say the bike looks beautiful. From some angles it does look meaty, but overall it is very dated and confused. I say confused because it doesn’t look like streetfighter, it doesn’t look like a café racer. It just looks very, - commuterish, and it is categorized as such in most countries.

The rear looks thin, especially with the two exhausts. The best view would be the front 3/4th, where the bike looks its biggest. The lines are very simple and would suit very simple tastes, but when you have precedents like the BKing concept, years to work on it and competition like the CBR250 (on the budget side), then how can the single most important thing in this segment be ignored – looks.

The Indian motorcycling youth is heavily inclined towards looks and then functionality or anything else. There is no brand loyalty legacy here like Yamaha’s RX100 that would also drive people to buy this.
Rather than stamping this out as a disappointment just based on this aspect, I would like to now look at the positive sides and delve a little deeper.

Best thing would be to have a look yourself and decide, it just might hit the right chords.

Performance
Twin cylinder, 248cc, 24.5 Bhp@7000 rpm. It will rev up to 10,500, but it feels on edge. The acceleration is nothing to write home about and the gears are pretty short. I was at a speedo indicated 110 kmph at 8000 rpm. And you can’t do this all day long, as the engine feels strained though smooth. It is not aimed at the performance bike category hence it can pass of a great premium performance commuter.

It should cruise at 80-90 all day long with a fly screen however.

I rode it for around 30 km on the highway and in city. The torque is good enough for you to set up little red light GPs, but watch out if it’s a bike like the KTM 200. However expect respectable pull only above 4500 rpm.

Aural
Sounds decent, in-between the single cylinder CBR250 but definitely not sweet as the Ninja 250 at higher revs. But you will get heard if you are maxing it out at 10500 rpm or thereabouts.

Rideability
The bike is incredibly easy to ride. Flip the stand, thumb the starter and you are off. Everything is very functional and the seat is widest in class offering great comfort, especially for the pillion. The build quality is also very good, the kind expected from Suzuki.

What Else?

The success of this bike will depend on the price and the positioning. It can be marketed any which ways, but there are bikes which do not need any marketing and the customer knows they are worth their salt. The Suzuki Hayabusa was an insane success. The Suzuki Bandit 1250 was also a plain looking bike but very functional and served the purpose. It was a decent success. However the IZ250 is different, it is competing in an already very competitive market and its major buyers will be the youth who are very tired of going through decades of drought of good performance bikes in India. I am not sure if they would like to relive that again.
Put this mill into a mini BKing or a GSXR 250 if you may and I will line up first to buy it!

[sms interaction on Tuesday]

Me - Hey Sid, lets go to Masinagudi this weekend.
Sid - Sounds good, let me confirm you by Thursday.
.
.
.
(Thursday)
Sid - I'm game. Let's do it on Sunday.
Me - Err, I was planning for a Saturday ride, I have office on Sunday. :(

Sid - Arrey bhai, Saturday is never a leave for me.
Me - Ok, let me see. (I had to go to office to complete a few pending tasks)
...
...
(I complete more than half of the backlog by Friday. Also, I throw in an excuse - I have to visit my granny on Sunday, it's not negotiable. :D )

Me - Sid, I am free, I threw such and such excuse.
Sid - dafuq! Ok, let's ride.
---------------------

3 riders, 700+ kms. 21 hours ride. Morning 4 AM till night 1 AM.
Ooty, Kotagiri through 3 different forest reserves - Bandipur, Mudumalai & Sathyamangalam.

Highlights of the ride:
5. 5+ close shaves.
6. Night ride through jungles.
7. A severely aching butt!

So, we were 3 of us, yours truly, Adarsh (@Adarsh_bk) and Sid (@plasmabhai)

The plan was as vague as it could get. Ride to Masinagudi and then decide what to do next. Adarsh confirmed his entry after getting a routine checkup at Joel's, me and Sid were prepared with the necessary spares and medi kits just in case.

So, I and Sid leave from our meeting point (Pizza Hut, opp IISC) at 3:45 AM. He calls Adarsh and informs him to be ready. Adarsh would join us at NICE road junction towards Mysore.

It takes us half an hour to reach there and Adarsh shows up in another 5 min.
Pleasantries exchanged, we move towards Masinagudi. Our 1st break will be 100 kms away at Maddur. I guess Sid wanted to stop at Mandya, but we took a break at Sarowara tea stall in Maddur.

Good morning birdie!

After a good 20-25 min break, we set off towards the (unplanned) destination. It was Masinagudi for now. Our next stop was another 100 kms away.

By the way, while Adarsh took a pee break, I was checking out the massive chicken strips after the highway ripping.

So, as planned we halt near Gundlupet. We spotted a CCD with an HP petrol bunk to its side. Perfect place to tank up our bellies as well as the rides'. We take an hour break there.

Chains lubed, tanks filled and air pressure checked, we set off.

At Bandipur gate, where we were trying out our jugaads for a video. Will put them in a separate post.

We spotted various species of flora and fauna, but sadly couldn't stop to click them. They're covered in the video though.

We reached Ooty and it was cold. Loved the experience. We had a light friut breakfast. In the meanwhile.

Now I know where Tusshar Kappor stayed. :p

It was then Adarsh gave a call to Phanikar sir. What he suggested was what we followed almost.
So the vague trip to Masinagudi transformed into:

BLR - Masinagudi - Ooty - Kotagiri - Mettupalayam - Sathyamangalam - Chamarajanagara - Kanakapura - BLR.

This route has so so many curves. We knew right then that we'd be back by 11 or 12 at night. We proceeded.

Midway, we spotted spy cars with MH 15 and MH 16 reg plates, no idea which car that was.

On the way to Kotagiri and then the view point.

By this time, Adarsh had had his share of close shaves, when he was almost hit by a Luna guy who was acting weird on the road, a cat and a dog.

But, the biggest scares came for me and Sid later. We realized that it was no more hunky dory and we need to ride hard to be back home. After all, Monday is a working day.

We ride towards Sathy now, but I must say calling Phani sir was indeed a great idea.

Its getting late by the time we reach Sathy. Needless to say, TN is hot (except hill stations of course). It was when Adarsh was lost. We waited for him for nearly half an hour. It was a tense moment. Mobiles were not working, we were in the jungle and Adarsh is nowhere in sight. Just as we were about to trace back, he showed up.

He actually didn't see us passing by in traffic and he was waiting for us to come.

Ok, time to ride through forests thick and fast. :cycling:
It was here were Sid had a near miss. The road was not visible and he missed falling off the cliff by less than 2 inches. It suddenly curved away and there was no boundary at all!

It was actually scary and cold. We continued riding through. I guess we took almost 2 hours to exit the jungle area and get on straight roads in Karnataka. I felt nice seeing human civilization again.

We had dinner at a Delhi/Punjabi dhaba. And we still had to cover 250 kms to reach BLR.

We rode hard. Most of the times Sid and Adarsh would race ahead fast and I was at least a km behind them. I was feeling sleepy when I had the scare of my life.
There was a fork where the straight road would split into 2 at acute angles and there was a ditch straight ahead between the forks.
I missed seeing the forks due to sleepiness, lack of light and mostly due to speed. I ran into the ditch! All I knew was that I'm going to crash. I braked a bit, downshifted to 3rd and continued on a straight path in the ditch for about 50 odd meters. It was rocky and feared if I fell, I'd break bones. Adding to that, both of these were probably 2 kms away by now and my phone was tucked away in my bag within a plastic cover because it was raining ever so slightly.
God's goodness prevailed and I didn't crash. I simply let engine braking do its job.

Uff! Time to take out my torch. No rim bends visible. Fairing not broken. All is well. My drowsiness vanished! I was fresh now and raced behind these 2. It took me approx 5 min to see their tail lights. Thereafter, I followed them close. :p

2-3 minor breaks in between and we were back home safe by 1 AM. Ah, a mighty ride this was. Quite challenging and worth every single moment of living through the experience.

Lastly, mileage with full tank to full tank method ~47.6 kmpl.

Purchasing/Spending Power of Indian Bikers.

I was just wondering, what is the purchasing power of indian bikers. how much money an average indian biker is ready to spend on buying a new bike.

Although it is not possible to discuss in terms of absolute amounts here, and very few may divulge correct info, so we can talk in terms of multiplication factor of monthly salary.

In my opinion, an average biker purchases a bike whose price varies between 2 to 6 times his monthly salary. kindly tell us what is the figure for you, i.e. how many times the monthly salary. and whether its on loan or cash purchase.

I am not able to create a poll, mods can you do it for me--

Poll Title-" Yous bike's cost is how many times your monthly salary"

less than or equal to 2 times monthly salary

2 to 3 times monthly salary

4 to 6 times monthly salary

more than 6 times monthly salary

It has been a month since my last ride. My mind was craving for one more. Plan was set about 2 weeks ago, but the time, IMO, was simply not right. This Sunday, finally the awaited hour came. I left home at 4 am wishing to beat the heat, to the hills. This trip was a mixture of ups and downs (both literally and symbolically).

Just like last time, it was a trip made for riding. Well, the beat the heat part wasn't pretty much successful as the suit I was wearing was acting like kind of a thermostat. The ride from Chandigarh to Shahzadpur was a breeze, except for some poultry farms greeting me with their odour. And then I took a wrong turn at Kala-Amb and reached Sadhura. The country side road was beautiful, so I didn't mind getting lost. Then I took a U-turn back to Kala-Amb and proceeded towards Nahan. My earlier plan was to take a longer way via Kaulawala Bhood Road. I reached till Balsar and then a dead end. Couldn't figure out where to go. I guess took a wrong turn somewhere or there was a way amongst the villages. I asked a person and he suggested to go back. Some how I was convinced and traced back my route to Kala-Amb. Then I stuck to the highway to Nahan.

As soon as I left Nahan, the roads were in pathetic condition till the turn leading to Sri Renukaji (SH2-MDR1 intersection). The road is under construction so loose gravel everywhere. Riders gotta watch out. The ride to Sri Renukaji is in a beauty itself. The curves, the slopes, the landscape are simply amazing. I went till the Temple and lake complex. stayed there for a while and returned. Again from SH2-MDR1 intersection towards Dharampur, the road is in pretty bad shape due to construction work. Lost my balance twice, though fall avoided as speed was in single digits. On the bright side, now I know how to tackle loose gravel.

After approx 20-25kms, the roads are back to normal again, rather excellent. Then it was a sprint back home.

Summary:
Route: Chandigarh - Dera Bassi - Shazadpur - Naraingarh - Nahan - Sri Renuka Ji - Dharampur - Himalayan Expressway - Chandigarh

Total Distance Covered: 355.1 Kms
Total Time: 12.5 Hours
Time on Road: 11 Hours approx
Pit Stops: Tea after Kala-Amb (Quality was OK; brunch at McD, NH22 (after Dharampur)

Road update: 30+ kms in bad shape, loose gravel on SH2 after Nahan.

More pics coming up... :)
