  • problem:p220 very low top speed

    Hi All,

I bought a used p220, Jan 2010 model, with odometer reading 7200km, in Sep last year. After few weeks I got a chance to test its top speed. I could reach speed of only 129 kmph. I thought it could be because the service was due. After that last week only I again got a chance to push it to top speed and again it could go at 129kmph only. I believe a one and a half year old p220 should atleast go at 135kmph. Can anyone please tell me what could be wrong with my bike?

ps: got new clutch plates at 10000km

are u sure u are shifting at the right time??

also get the carb tuning checked and try crouching once u hit 120....

i hope you r wearing proper gear while testing theses speeds..

@revvhard: After shifting to 2nd gear at 6000rpm, i start upshifting rest of the gears at around 9000rpm. I observed that in 4th gear i could go above 9000 rpm bt when i slow down to upshift in 5th gear it refuses to go above 8000rpm.
Thanks for tipping on carb tuning. although i seriously doubt the guys at probiking bt i will do it. Can air-filter also affect the top-speed?

          @ sonny

The issue can be anywhere, it needs an expert to exactly analyze the issue.

I had the same issue with my R15 (almost 3 yr old), the bike will hit 10.5K RPM in 5th gear, but will struggle at 9,500RPM in 6th gear, Speedo will never display anything more than 135kays.

My issue was with the Front axle, replaced it and now reaches over 140 with ease. not sure how the axle lost its shape....

So get you bike checked from top to bottom to nail out the issue.

            How old are the tyres?

When was the bike tuned last?

P220 Dtsi should do 140 atleast!

How old is the chain sprocket?

Have you tried crouching? My bike is much older than yours (1st lot, i.e. August 2009). Done 33k km . Still does 150+. Lots of things affect Top speed. Read the links in my signature (below) to better understand your bike.

P.S.: 1. Clutch plates shouldn't require changing at 10k. They last close to 25-30k minimum. You have been taken for a ride IMHO.
              2. Sprockets last till 18-25k km.
              3. Please invest in adequate safety gear (if you haven't already) before making your next speed run.
              4. Get the carb. tuned by an experienced mechanic as I believe you are running too rich.
