Exclamation Unicorn converted to DC Headlight. Help to increase battery charging rate.

Sorry for created this thread but i had posted it here and didn't get any response.
Improving headlight

Well i own a Unicorn for which i converted the Headlamps to DC bcz the stock lights were very poor. I ve also put OSRAM NIGHTBREAKER 55/60w bulb.
In simple the light is superb, i am pretty happy with the performance.

Now the discharging rate will be more than the charging rate of battery, right? I want this problem to be solved. Pls help me.

--> If i change the regulator alone will the charging rate increase or should i get the coil rewind done?

--> If not what other possibility is there to increase charging rate of battery?

--> ZMA also has a DC headlight with 7ah battery, so can i use any of ZMA's component that increase the charging rate? Eg. Alternator or Regulator.

--> I also heard that Avenger's alternator will fit fine, is that true? Is it a direct fit to Uni also??

Please do help me techies i am very much worried bcz i battery gets drained soon

I tooo have converted my Head Light too DC before my Kutch trip, but ive made it optional. Ive put a switch to put it on DC so now they work exactly as HD works when you presss the pass switch. But yet the battery drains prety fast.

I had asked my mech about the coil option but he said due to some reasons it is not possible in the Uni. Not sure about this.

The chargin also depends on the bulb tht ur usin. Im usin a Phlips 60W white bulb.

Lightbulb A small update

I just enquired couple of electrical shops. Some said they don't know about 2 wheelers and finally got a person who said he does the job for 2 wheelers.
He said changing the regulator/rectifier will increase the charging rate of battery. Is that true? If so then of which bike rectifier i ve to put .
AFAIK AVENGER and P220 are the only bikes coming with stock 55w bulb. Correct me if i am wrong. So whether their rectifiers will fit fine on Uni. Will it solve my problem?

Hey Shreeni

i have a cbz-xtreme which is like the sister bike of uni , even te cbz-x stock headlight is poor, so i had the coil rewinded and put in a rectifier (with a higher rating of current)

I got this done in bangalore, and there are plenty who know to do this coil rewinding and getting the appropriate rectifier.

my headlight isnt DC btw, running on 65w mico bulb, and its defn defn better than the stock. and my battery never gets drained (although its a crap battery so loses charge overnight )

approx cost was around 900 including the rectifier.

some points
- if you are getting the coil rewinded, its NECESSARY to change the rectifier as well, or your electricals/ fuses go *poof*
- always switch the headlight off when you're using the self start. creates a load on the system.

Cheers
Sudeep

Thank you very much for this piece of info
I enquired and one of my fren got this work done in a way simple manner. He just changed the Rectifier with that of Avenger and his headlights are glowing superb with a 55/60w bulb.

I am very keen on DC bcz shortly i am planning for HID setup which definitely needs DC setup.

My serious doubt is - HOW DO I increase the charging rate

I Think you should add another charger for it.

Dont know if it will work exactly, there may be more work here that just adding another charger.
I once had asked my mechanic for switching my bikes headlight to DC, he said it can be done & if its drawing two much power he will add another charger which will double the process.

well the charging rate depends on the coil's xAh generation, after all it's a dynamo. Coil rewinding has to be there (so that more flux in the coil can generate more current) , and yes HID even though run nicely with a 7ah battery, but it drains out pretty fast.

best option would be to go for coil rewinding + rectifier setup. your DC circuit will not need any changes. you'll need a new rectifier BECAUSE the rectifier's job is to make the current from AC - > DC, and the higher current generated by the coil will blow out the rectifier (since it'd be double of the previous value of current generated)

ALSO, as soon as you've done the rewinding, pop in a 65w mico bulb (cheap and good) till you go in for HID , because the excess current generated will also be needed to be utilised , why ?

remember your battery will charge very fast if you continue with the 35w bulb, but then there will be a time when the battery will be fully charged then where will the excessive current go ?

im continuing with the 65w bulb and there are no battery charging/draining issues.

although still remember even when you pop in a 35W HID kit, self + HID lights = oops (since HID draws large current)

As i mentioned earlier itself i am using a Osram Nightbreaker 55/60w bulb which is gr8, i donno what is going to happen to my battery. U said ur using 65w bulb and there is no battery charging/draining issues. This issue occurs only if ur using it on DC. If its stock wiring with 55/60w bulb then there is not much changes needed to get max brightness.
