    Well, frankly thats a fear that haunts me too.

    AFAIK, these are the ways you can keep a check -

    Keep a check on visible smoke. Smoke means the engine is getting oil. But with the low smoke oils, its difficult, esp. when visibility is low.

    Try and have transparent oil tubes (assuming you don't have them already).

    Make sure the throttle cable is in good shape. If it breaks after where it splits to go to the pump, the engine will get less oil.

    Keep the pump adjusted prefectly.

    Keep the system absolutely free from contamination. No, you CANNOT count on mechanics for this!

    And no, oil will not flow when you keep moving the throttle when engine is off.
