hey.. I took d mysore-hunsur-virajpet-kannur route. The road is really bad for around 50kms or so right aftr u deviate from the madikeri highway til u reach d Kerala border, passing virajpet. After d border u can maintain decent speeds with a good but 2 way road. I did mysore to mangalore n back via hassan a year ago. Dont kno abt d mnglre-kannur road, must b gud as its d same NH17 goin dwn frm mumbai to deep dwn. I rode NH17 frm kannur to kochi n allepey n it was smooth.

I traveled in that area two years back. The roads could have changed drastically. I suggest you ask in the forum.
The route however is very beautiful.
