  • The ultra blue Halogen Bulb

Two days back I planned to try another blue or white light or xenon (actualy whatever its called !!, , there are just too many terms for it) halogen bulb ... the fact being that i have already been trying and testing these bulbs from the time ive bought my bike ... thats around three years ago ...

I always wanted to buy HID but never have the required funds ... also bhopal roads arent very well lit .. so me n fellow xbhpians from bhopal are quiet mad abt trying our best to improve our bike's vision. We've tried a couple of these bulbs... One more point its too difficult to get HID in bhopal...

Since im from Muscat, Last year i ended up gettin 260W white light bulb (Rs 300) .. which was completely foolish thing tht i did .. the Bulb didnt ended up lighting even lesser light than the previous setup... that wasnt the bulb's mistake .. but as i said it was foolishness ...

Previously before i had changed my bike's Fairing .. when I had the Alien looking (if ull remember what a Yamaha Fazer looks Like) fairing ... I had installed two of these white light bulbs of the same rating 25w each (Rs 150 each ... got looted .. i was completely new to the Indian Biking Scenario at that time) which i had bought from mumbai .... well they were different from the present HS1 bulb that the bike uses now. Those were really good. Enjoyed the light they gave me for a period of 2 months after which I changed the Fairing.

So day b4 ended up with this new bulb. All thanks to the fellow xbhpian Ashish who also installed it on his Pulsar the previous day ( He has also experimented with a couple of these .. always in a failure).

Well the light is not white or neither blue .. its Ultra Blue ... thats what the Company that manufactured the bulb says .. N i also believe that.

The light has produced satisfying results. Much better than the Halonix HS1 normal 35W bulb ... Its not a striking Blue like the HID which i just saw on a ZMA n a FZ16 which I in the 2day ... But it produces this different white n blue mix .. like I said Ultra Blue ...

For all the people who own Pulsars and hate people who keep their High Beam ON : The day Ashish installed it he tried it on a really dark road with oncoming traffic. With his High Beam on. People were using their pass switch for the first time ever to signal to him to lower his beam. Thts how Ashish Tested it. Well We do that only for testing. Please Donot follow this. This could lead to serious accidents

The bulb costed Rs 90 /-. quiet cheap compared to the amounts I Paid earlier.

The rest will be spoken by the pics.

Ill soon post pics of Ashish's Pulsar 150 and a pic of the headlight of a Pulsar 150 with a normal bulb for a comparison. Both the Bikes will be idling at a RPM of 2000 so as to provide equal amount of current to them

To tell you the truth, it was not because of more intense beam from your new bulb that ppl were dipping their lights, and expecting your friend also to follow suite.

It was simply beacuse these blue/white lights are extremely irritating.

      As simple as that.

The yellowish tinge of normal halogen bulb gives a soft hue to the light, which our eyes tolerate pretty easily. Even at pretty high light intensity.

The blue (fake HIDs I call 'em) is on the other hand totally irritating to the eyes, even at the lower intensity that your new Blue bulb produces.

Now you may scowl, when I say the new blue bulb is of lower intensity than the normal halogen.
Well the physics is on my side, when I claim that.

      Lets take a 35 W bulb - halogen.
      What light does it produce?
Mainly Yellow, Orange, Red, Infra red.

      What about the Blue bulb?
Err, actually the blue bulb is nothign but a halogen bulb painted blue, so that all the other colors are absorbed and only blue is able to pass to outside world.

What this means is that your yellow, orange and red spectrum is absorbed by the blue filter.
And you get a feeble blue light.

Incandescent lamps are not good in producing blue spectra. And if you fileter everythign BUT the blue spectra, you won't be left with much light.

And then again, we have biology to take into consideration.

Our (Human) eyes are most sensitive to green-yellow spectra. Not to blue.
Try simple test - at your home. Get a green bulb, yellow bulb and a blue bulb (small 6-12 W night lamps).
Try reading a newspaper under those lights.

So next you may say - ah this guy is bonekrs, and using wrong fundamentals of physics and biology.
If this is the case - then how and why do ppl talk about HIDs all the time?

Again, physics comes to my rescue.
HID = usually xenon lamps - that dont work on incandecent principle - but gas discharge.

In those cases - the light produced is true white (like tube light). And you use reflecting lenses in the headlight assembly to keep the beam on the raod - and not INTO people's eyes.

My advice: please remove those blue lights. They illuminate nothing, and just cause a dazzling glare to on coming traffic, especially those in cars (because they are placed lower than bikes)

@lakhanironak: Pls see.. The post that you have made, please rectify it to a normal font...

Also i have tried using it.. the actual light seems to be less than that of the original stock light and on top of it...you need to keep the bike on a higher RPM to keep it bright..
Finaly a H.I.D solves my problem of low light on the road..

Alpha1, Very good post! And I echo you, these blue/white dazzling lights are very irritating. It actually sparks road rage in my opinion. Also guys with HIDs with high color temperature.
Finally, these things just have poser value and not much funtion, i.e if you are looking for illumination and not P$$$ing off fellow road users.

Lakhani, go easy on the punctuations and font colors bro. Tia.

The blue bulbs have no functional value, they are all show & no go. They do look 'cool' but that all about them Please avoid using them.

cheapo kits from korea that do work are available for Rs 2100 in Hyderabad. They said that teh prices fell suddenly from Rs 2900 and hence they expect it to go a little up again.

BTW, my advice would be to go for a genuine kit from Philips / Osram / GE / Bosch. I know they are expensive... but still!

You might want to check autolamps-online.com and hid-online.com... they're currently shipping anywhere in the world, free.

Dude, Thanks for your Physics Lecture. Why dont you go on to the roads and teach those lakhs of people that everyday use their HIGH beam for what so ever reason and irritate the rest of the lakhs, or even vice versa. Hope that can improve the situation. FYI i am a student of electronics engineering and very well imformed about the spectrum of light. Also i have already warned others not to practise what I was doing as it is harmful and I was too testing it only.

Dude, do you have a problem wid colours and wid the punctuations ? And since the moderators have had no probs with my post, why do you have a problem wid it ?

I guess all of you above are from one of the metros. Come to a small city like Bhopal and you'll notice that there are bigger issues on the road than looking at what kinda bulb or colour of bulb a biker is using in his headlamp.

I was just trying to give some info that could help everyone with their dreams of HID. And the bulbs have functional value, my previous post should explain why.

Dude! If yuo have noticed the moderators do have a problem with the colors and fonts. Your initial post has been edited to reflect the same.

And to add to techno's post. Its totally true, doesn't matter which metro or village you are from. Blue light is not brighter than white/yellow light which is more suitable for better vision. Blue or excessive white light only irritates the eyes and makes it seem more bright. We have already been through what you are going through now, so I hope you get the point rather than take it in the wrong way.

Dude, you may blame me coming from a Metro, but I have seen all sorts of places all over this country.

Headlight beams is truly speaking the very least of worries, but it is something which by virtue of its triviality gets ignored pretty easily.
However as a forum which is dedicated to promoting of responsible road sense, I would really advise you to understand the problems others will face on the road.

Infact putting on HIDs would be even more dangerous.
HIDs worldwide are banned on reflector headlight setup. You need to have an intelligent lens assembly which, according to the orientation of the bike, keeps the light beam on the road.

Otherwise the beam from HIDs would simply blind the oncoming traffic. (Which it does in so many cases where ppl don't follow the rules and regulations, and just fit the Xenons on their existing reflector holders)

The thing about blue lamps (fake HIDs) is that its not going to benefit you in anyway possible.
The illumination from blue lamps is extremely low, and may causes inconvenience in the areas of low street lighting.

Sorry for my first post. I know it sounded blunt and harsh. I couldn't help it.
I drive a car. old Honda city - which is one of the lowest cars in India. And I really get irritated by these flashy lights.
                        Especially high beams.

@alpha1: Thanks for the info. I seriously dint know regarding the HID and the beam setup. I will remove the white/blue bulb soon.

@SKSy_Biker : I have very well noticed that the moderators have changed the font in my post, and i have no problems wid it. Wat I actually have a problem wid is that the rest of the members here on xbhp are more worried abt advising me regarding the font colour rather than giving me a honest opinion. If I were really dum then I would have made a problem regarding the same when my post's font colour was changed.

                            @ thread starter..
Bother I have used the very same bulbs for my R15..and guess what.. ended up switching back to stock bulbs.
I have posted bout these bulbs along with pictures of bulbs.. the carton and the headlight with bulbs On.. I dont remember the page numbers but you can get it if you go through a few older pages.

Initially I was happy with the effect..but that didn't last long.. The bulb only apears bright for on coming traffic but it is of no use to the person using it. The light fades off with the on coming traffic's yellow light.

Yeah.. I come from a metro but I do touring a lot.. you can check this by going through the tourer's section and reading my trip logs. I was in very bad condition because of these bulbs when I had gone to pune and was returning home late night.
