1.3 Lakh Fatal Accidents in India/ year.

While the vehicle sales in India is among the fastest in Asia and the rest of the world, there is something that is also a worrying issue. It has been reported that India has the highest number of fatalities due to road accidents of any country, with 130,000 people dying on Indian roads every 12 months, a figure which works out at 14 deaths per hour, according to India Transport Portal. It was mentioned that Indian roads are also dangerous for non-fatal accidents, with an estimated 1.6 million serious injuries occurring annually. There are several reasons for this, but the core reason is the relaxed traffic rules on Indian roads and the approach people, both members of the public and those in positions of power, take to them.

According to ITP, with such high figures, it would seem natural Indians would want to do everything possible to tackle the problem. Yet in the wake of UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon’s announcement of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety in May, a campaign in which countries around the world will introduce plans for improved road safety and victim services as well as host a range of high-profile events in a bid to cut the number of deaths and injuries caused by road accidents, there has hardly been a rush of support for such measures to do something about the situation on Indian roads.

So why the conditions on Indian roads are so bad and why is there is such a relaxed approach to traffic rules? The truth is it is an understatement to say the traffic rules on Indian roads are relaxed; it would be more to the point to say they are virtually non-existent. Cars, bicycles, scooters, pedestrians, ox-drawn carts and cows all mix on main roads through Indian cities, none paying any attention to road markings or traffic rules and recommendations. Virtually every vehicle is dangerously overloaded and yet this seems to encourage people to drive more recklessly, knowing they have more passengers to get to their destination on time.

A recent study found that in Delhi, the national capital and the city with the highest density of vehicles, there are 146 million traffic violations daily, but of these a mere 20,000 are picked up and booked. These low figures mean people know they can ignore the traffic rules and escape punishment. A study of the entire country would no doubt be incredibly revealing of the national attitude to safety on Indian roads. It is the attitude of individuals to safety on Indian roads that causes the greatest problem. Aside from overloading, people speed, ignore road markings and signs, drink-drive and fail to maintain their own vehicles or the roads. This state of affairs will only change with stronger action from government, none of which appears forthcoming at the moment.

There is no true traffic management system for Indian roads and any agencies involved in trying to improve this are confused and overlap. There are not enough police personnel employed to clamp down on violators, and those currently working do not take their role seriously enough. Indian roads and the country’s infrastructure must be improved. And government must instil in the population a less relaxed approach to the rules. Only then might the current situation of relaxed traffic rules on Indian roads change and fewer people be killed or injured daily.

its true us indians are completely negligent of traffic rules....... which is the main reason for accidents........

when my brother went to the UK he ran a light there and the surveillance cam caught only half of his number plate and yet they had tracked him down and he had to pay a fine

just making traffic rules is not enough seeing to it that they are followed is also important.......like the helmet rule was implemented for a month and then cops got tired of stopping everyone on the streets and telling them to wear a helmet.....

The problem is not only people breaking traffic rules, the problem is also the infrastructure, that is badly designed signals, pedestrians crossings, quality of roads, pot holes (I mean craters), silly and dangerous center partitions which cannot be seen, poor lighting.

I will give you an example. In Pune there is a excellent road called Nagar Road, most places it will almost 3 lanes on each side, concrete and almost no potholes. The problem is, the start of the road has an amazing 4 feet high and 5 feet wide center divider. But that only lasts for about 2kms. After it nothing!! The problems began when someone decided to extend the divider all the way to the airport, another 3-4kms. The way they did it, was to use only a 6" tall and 4" wide concrete thing and do it up in parts. I almost witnessed 10 minor and 5 major accidents in the span of 2 days cause the small divider was simply not visible in the day or night.

The major accidents I have witness almost 40% of them are due to road works not being identified clearly, or someone has just not cleaned up after themselves. All contractors should be legally liable if they cause an accident due to insufficient warning signs or repair work.

To add to it, Pune has to be the capital of the worst roads on this planet. Horrible infrastructure, improperly planned and constructed roads and glaring absence of basic lighting at night.

Most of the concrete roads are so improperly leveled that any vehicle on the road is never stable. These roads are now permanently bad roads since concrete roads might (never know) stay this way for years. Old airport road is a prime example. From the Central Jail to Yerwada signal, the road has the most horrible of levels ever seen on any road.

Add to it, craters that would entice NASA to test their Mars Rover here.

Exatcly.
Here in the Cochin City.The signals at the Jn. work at Random!Most of the major Jn. have their Signal only ON every now and then,sometimes there will be a cop instead and sometimes noting at all!
and by 10-11PM most of the Major Signals at the Jn. are switched off! WTF?ad ppl are speeding through the Jn.!

Instead of just finding fault with infrastructure, we need to first focus on following rules. How many of us slow at blinking yellow light (many don't even stop at red light)? I have seen xbhp get together where everyone is ignoring lights and riding above 100kmph. When the members of an internet forum (thus implying atleast a decent enough education level) does not follow rules, just imagine how many others are there who do not follow rules (riding / driving on wrong side to avoid few extra metres to take a U turn, riding 3up, no consideration to lights etc)

The change needs to come from within and we need to give bit more importance to a human life, be it ours or of others.

Everyone holds the other person responsible for any mistake that happens. Some people are plain insensitive or some even act too smart to the extent that they think that rules are stupid/ breaking rules is fun.
