Question Your bike maintenance cost

YOUR BIKE MONTHLY MAINTENANCE COST

Hi guys,
i have ROYAL ENFIELD THUNDERBIRD.
Its a very amazing bike the only thing bad about it is her maintenance cost which is actually unbearable.
Maintenance cost comes around Rs 2000/- per month some times even more

At every 10k km i have to replace chain set, clutch plates and tappet set.

3 lt engine oil at every service even some SBK don't require this much engine oil(i think).

i have to change clutch chain even at every 12k km.
This one is my third thunderbird i sold my previous one because after 33k km their was a play in crank( very very expensive)

Clutch and front break cables are not reliable at all they dont last long, i even changed meter gauge of wheel at 13k km and meter wire also. Rear Break leathers does only 1500 to 2000 km.

every year i have to change the tappet set wich cost around 4500/-
each survice cost me more than 1200/-

I want to know how much other bikes maintenance cost around.
Please pen down your experience of maintenance of your bike, please include all the expense which comes under maintenance.

That is a pretty hefty maintenance package you undertake!

Dude, what do you do with your RE? My RE is over five years old and close to 40,000 kms, and the only thing I had to replace was the rear sprocket due to my extensive touring which resulted in a wear and tear. My maintenance costs for the bike including engine oil is like, Rs. 4000 a year.
Clutch wires break, but not if you maintain it. Every month, take out your clutch wire, pass some engine oil through it and put it back in again. That should prolong your clutch wire life for close to 15,000 kilometers.

Either you are using your RE like a RX100, or it seems your mechanic is ripping you off. Can't think of any other reason why your parts are falling apart.

my bike needs no more than regular servicing(exceptions of clutch plates,.... as they are not changed frequently), monthly expenditure is around 50-100bucks only that sets an overall figure of 600-1200rs a year.

The main maintenance cost is due to tappet wear i need to replace them every year, this is the main reason why TB failed and i have done 13k km on my current TB and have replace tappet once and ready to replace them again, chain set once, clutch plates, clutch chain, meter wire and gauge of wheel, i use castrol power one, each service labor is around 300, cone set one time, break leather i cant even count, 3 time clutch wire,

tappet repair- 4500+ engine oil
chain set around 1100
clutch around 600
clutch wire 150
cone set + its labor 450 and 1100 if you go for tapper bearings
4 time service in a year 300x4labor +900x4oil + other spares which you buy during service like oil filter and air filter(not on every service)etc

Thank god my engine runs ok other wise it could have cost me a bomb.

I think this cost is coming because i use it as my daily commuting bike in heavy traffic of delhi where you have to apply lots of clutch and breaks.
And TB is designed for touring on empty roads

I own a Yamaha Gladiator... I service my bike once every 2000 kilometers or a little before that in case i have ripped my bike a lot... Overall the service usually comes to around 500 bucks... That make it around 3000 bucks a year for the periodic servicing... Other than that i have had very small probs such as indicator bulbs not working and stuff so that is really negligeble expense... Add another Rs 1000 yearly for the small probs like the one mentioned above and few washes and oiling of the chain that i do in between my services... Total cost of maintenance a year: Max 4000 bucks as now!!! ( touch wood)...

And about your thunderbird... There is seriously something wrong there... From what i know and seen of my friends RE's and my conversations with the numerous RE mechs near my house they are not that maintenance heavy as ur bike is... See if you can find another xbhp RE owner in delhi and consult him about the bike...

Thanks, but I still find it unusual for a RE to rack up so much cost. I also use my RE everyday for commuting - I have lived in Delhi for many years, and trust me, Bangalore is way worse as far as stop and go's are concerned

Bought a used uni 1.5 years back(clocked 18500kms at that time), since then covered 7500 kms...In last 1.5 years I have spent ~3000/- on my uni, 3 servicing, 1st time ~1200/-(broke headlight cover, tire slipped in rain and bike toppled), 2nd time and 3rd time ~ 800-900. though this time its gonna cost more, need battery replacement. usually I give my bike for servicing when it needs any spare changes/cleaning. so no other cost involve.. yeah paying life tax in different states is much more costly then maintaining it.

Nov2004 to Aug2009 (Ambition135) Total Maintainence cost (Svc + Spares + labour) : Rs.3900/- only. (of which Rs.1500/- was in last year for clutch plate/ chain set/ spark plug / speedocable / aclr cable replacement). I had all bills in tact and gave it to the buyer in Aug2009 (All svc. done at HH ASS).

Avg. Monthy maintainence cost : 3900/58 = Rs.67/- only
