I never wash my bike. Iam least bothered about its looks. It would look like a dirt bike anytime of the year. U can even find my rear alloy to have become totally black in color due to regular and heavy spillage of oil on it. However i make sure everything else is running fine.
But whenever i wash the bike, i totally strip it and take almost half a day to clean it to a sparkling shine. I use clinic plus shampoo. For the next few days it smells like clinic plus shampoo whenever the engine gets hot. Coming to polish, i use the ordinary polish costing 40rs available at Shell Fuel Stations. I havent had any problems of rusting till date.

IMo too frequent washing would cause rust to catch up.

one should wash the bike, and keep the dirt off the brakes, chain, engine, radiator ( in case of LC machines ), and grime from the alloys/hubs etc ( in case they foul the bearings.

Basically all mechanical parts should be clean.

visually you can always use a good wax, and wipe clean often with a wet and dry cloth alternately.

What ive seen is cases of rusting in Bikes like R15, and bullets ( under the tank, behind the side panels etc), where the ingestion of water is easy, but to remove it is a task.

I mustve washed my bullet a total of 15 times in the last 6 years that ive had her. Other than rustin on the leg guard, there isnt much rust anywhere else.

Also the keyhole like at the ignition, side panel, seat lock etc, tend to get rusty or hard to operate if water enters. best bet is to spray zorrick inside the lock once the bike is washed.

wont water and then sunlight cause the rubber mounts/fittings etc to get hard and brittle???

During summers & winters I don't wash my bike at all. Just wipe using a soft cloth (usually an old vest) very very gently. In rainy season maybe 3-4 times.

I am getting too old for the mushakkat and feel like crying when I see the 'water service' that happens around. They spray water at high pressure indiscriminately

So the daily wash that the watchman gives to all bikes and cars in the society - is that to be avoided? Should I ask him to just wipe it down with a dry cloth and give a wash with a wet cloth once a week myself?

Riding in the rain washes my bike.
So "how often" depends on how often I ride in the rains.

My watchman has been washing my bikes everyday for the past ten years. Absolutely zero problems whatsoever. Bike look shiny new till date. I wax/polish her up every month. Gets the jet black shine back. Only problem is black color is such that you can make out even the slightest of dust. so every time I get on her I make sure I again wipe her clean with a soft cloth.

Just take care of the above things which jd666 has mentioned and also take care that your watchman does not spill water over the fuel tank filler cap (else you gonna land up with some water in your tank). Tell him to simply wipe it clean with a wet cloth everyday and tell him not to spill water anywhere (specially the fuel tank and the brakes). Preferably wash her yourself once a month/15 days so that you keep her in spanking shape.

DONT ever use normal shampoo on your bike. You'll screw up the paint. Use a car shampoo instead.

Every morning when I look at her the first thing I do is, I wipe all the dust on her with a soft cloth.
I own R15 and P200, and I wipe both regularly, even if am not riding!
As far as washing is concerned, every 2nd sunday is the gala day!
Thorough washing with car shampoo, then rub off all the water with dry cloth, after that polish.
I never misuse gallons of water, instead I bath her off only with neccessary amount of water.

There is lots of dust around near my place...and its very very very difficult to keep the bike clean. But still. it gets a wash every week once and waxing once a month. and daily cleaning with soft cloth.

ofcourse, i dont like to see a single dust particle on my bike. nut even under the mud garud.

once after the wash, i apply grease at nessecary areas, Rust-Off at rust prone places and make sure that water doesnt stand at any places, especailly fuel cap.
