Lightbulb A biking application in a cell phone..

Hello
I have been a member of xbhp for the past 7months and am absolutely delighted to be part of it..(all this for the mods to approve my thread)
Getting down to business now, Im a student of computer science engineering and have this idea to help bikers in general.

I would like to write a cell phone application which helps bikers/tourers/commuters maintain their bikes and help them in touring.A major cell phone brand has offered to help me if the app idea is good..

The app helps you to calculate your mileage and tell you when you have to change your engine oil and remind you to to service your bike if its time..May be if you have been riding for long hours it suggests you take a break

Now i have shortlisted all these
1. Mileage calculator
2. Touring guide(may involve gps based maps in case you get lost and keeps a track of the quantity of fuel in your tank esp. useful if you have FZ16 like me whose fuel indicator is completely screwed)
3. Periodic alerts (servicing etc)

The application should be updated by the user ,the odo reading and fuel filled are the only inputs to be given by the user.

Now the regular tourers and other members of xbhp ,you have to tell me what other features would you like to be added onto this. And it would be of great help if you tell me if you would actually install such a application onto your cell phone(free one of course).

PS: I have to submit the synopsis tomorrow so PLEASE be frank and give me your suggestions asap.

Great initiative pali..
Apart from this if we can ascertain our monthly expenditures on fuel, repairing etc would be helpful
And yes Navigation is one thing which a biker/tourer needs..
Go for it
All the best

PS- If its possible to add major touring spots in respected states and cities, would be helpful for tourers to explore more..

Thanks
Varun

Which platform you are planning it in? I am sure it has to J2ME
Please don't mind this one/ Anyway, my opinion..a e71, GPS enables cellphone user would surely not like to digg in for GPSes and navigational purposes,
periodic services? - Well don't service centers call up and remind about them
mileage calculator - now thats something worth thinking for!

Nice idea!
i think it will be based on j2me.
well if you will be writing it please make it touch enabled and less memory eating.
now touch screen phones are flooding the markets and we don't have access to good touch enable apps.

Amazing go ahead bro.
I would request you to keep one area in the application where in terms of maintainence the user can save maintainence records. This would be helpful for especially P220 owners like me just because certain parts like the silencer and the one way clutch are replaced every now and then.

If this app can have an option to save the parts replaced under warranty would be great !!!!!!!!!!!! So that in case we have to shoot a mail to bajaj we can show them the record of how frequently these parts go bad and a number of such proofs will compell bajaj to respond and also improve their quality.... Hope this happens looking forward to you all the best!!!!

I am not a software engg but in case you need any help PM me I would love to assist you !!!!!!

maybe... a voice guided navigation... because it really is difficult to keep the phone out of your pocket while driving and even if you manage to have a separate holder for it on the handlebar... it would probably break off if you kiss a pot-hole...

It should be all biking in the application. A section on safe riding. Near by get aways (which can be updated from internet). If you can integrate with gps of cell phone then the total distance traveled with service reminder. A cell tower location finder for the phones without GPS. A speed limiter with an option of money saved can be awesome. It should not be battery killer. ummmm and and and O yeah if you can double it up like a blinking light that can be used as a warning light on highways during total bike breakdown. I will put more inputs as my brain gives me ingredients ..all the best buddy
