Default Engine Animation Links

Hi!

Came across this web-site that has excellent animations of some popular motorcycle engine configurations, namely the V-Twin and the Boxer Twin that can also be downloaded as screen-savers. The detailing is impressive and those who want to get a visual picture of what goes inside their engine can get a pretty good one here. For comparison, The Enfield Bullet engine is a push-rod actuated overhead cam engine just like the Evo and the Twin Cam below, the difference being that it is single cylinder. So go ahead and install these screen-savers....they'll give you something interesting to watch while you stare at the monitor and mull over a problem .

This one shows the Harley Davidson Evo series, an air-cooled 45 deg Twin

And this is for the classic BMW Boxer Twin. Some variant of this engine has been in production since early 1920's.

Yes, this is a good website; I couldn't understand much about the single pin HD's crank until I went through their animation.

FABULOUS Work Sir,
after seeing that video One can actually understand how an engine works,

But honestly it was at times too difficult to monitor both of them working simultaneously. And after you click on that play button again and again, you see diff phases and work around in an engine.
and in the end only leaves 2 pistons hanging anf running in the air.

Brilliant stuff sir.

But that's only for the HD's. Other V-Twin have two pin crankshaft, like you see for the boxter, but vertically instead of horizontally; Also not all the motorcycles have this type of single pin crankshaft; I'm aware of only two motorcycles - one is all HDs & other one Yamaha Roadstar.

Nice link there @aargee.

You are right about the 'single-pin' crank being almost unique to the HD's. The Boxter's horizontally opposed is also in a way a V-Twin...but with an included angle of 180 deg. The letter V no longer applies but there's quite a lot common in the engineering.

The animation here has even included the 'wasted spark' thing...which is commendable. The web-site owners are developing similar screen-savers for other configurations too. Will be fun watching a flat six in action on screen .

Would like to give you a piece of information - HD has resolved this wasted spark problem ever after they moved into fuel injection model; the firing now happens only after the compression stroke on each of the cylinders to match the 315/405 angles of firing.

That they have but yet again something tangible has been lost in the process. The wasted spark would burn the residual mixture still floating unburnt in the exhaust gases as they escaped the cylinder. The sound added to the V-Twin magic I must say. FI is crisp, technically 'right' and reliable...yes. But compare a Kodachrome image with a digital shot . Thats the difference. And as an after-thought..the 'wasted spark' was never a problem actually, just an imperfection.
