Default Are Indian two wheeler companies really professional to invoke recalls?

BMW recently recalled K1200 GT 122,000 motorcycles due to a risk of leak in the braking system. Source

Even after putting in the best of research and talent in the development of the K1200 GT they had the humility and customer comes first sense to accept and make the recall.

Now the big question is, have Indian companies reached this level of professionalism, or they are ready to hyperdrive into a state of denial and excuses?

Debate, examples etc without mudslinging invited.

Dont know about others but HMSI might do it if the problem is major, since their punch line is "I enjoy the quality". They have to live up to their image.
If my memory serves me right, they did face a small problem a few years back. The first generation unicorn's front doom used to rattle a lot at high speeds. Many customers complained about this and hmsi obliged, they offered to install rubber bushes for free.

Sunny, IIRC BAJAJ were professional enough to fix the breaking fork problem of their P200's. Thats one example I can think of.

From a personal level, I have had enough free of cost replacements on my R15 and RTR Fi to say that, yes Indian two-wheeler companies are mature enough. Atleast they may not be mature to recall the whole bike and replace it, but am sure that they replace the affected part ASAP and free of cost

Sunny - why do we even need to debate this? We're atleast 40-50 years behind the world on automotive front? I'm 100% sure they'll do NO recall. Reasons?
1. Lack of complex technologies to make mistake
2. Even if there're any faults, then these fixes will be done when the vehicles are serviced without customer's knowledge OR a public notice (like tender notice) will be announced on a popular daily stating - "those who want come & take"

Speaking from personal examples here.

Bajaj screwed up and hurried the design of the Bajaj P220 Fi quite a bit. But they were proactive enough to do part replacements for everyone in the first 1-1.5 years of the product launch.

Things as simple as an alternator to even something as big as the rear disc brake setup have been replaced for a lot of people.

I would not say they are 100% professional in their approach, but they are trying. Cannot comment on other manufacturers on this aspect.

Are HONDA, YAMAHA & SUZUKI also to be discussed about in this thread? Or is it just about bajaj, tvs etc...? (Indian two wheeler companies, as the topic suggests)

This was a commonly discussed problem in the forum precrash.
The Timing chain tensioner in the Karizma/Old CBZ/CBZ* which used to give away very early say 15k kms etc and the problem was common with everyone who used to drive fast(High RPM driving). The showrooms used to give a warranty replacement for the first time but not more than that. Most of the times the Tensioner was repaired not replaced without customers knowledge resulting in worn out crankshaft and connecting rod in a matter of 10k kms if the problem was ignored. The company then put that part in the moving parts list, the parts which cannot be replaced in the warranty claims etc.

hmmm.. i have seen bajaj come put with mandatory mods on the 220 , from the starter motor relay, to the stater gear etc. Which is good sense.

yamaha brought out the mandatory mod on the exhaust vent of the fairing of the R15, by installing a grille on it from the inside, when a bike caught fire.

Cant remember of any mods by RE! hehe

Unicorn had issues with the tail light rattling, and breaking the mounts, that was fixed for free by installing rubber bushes.

yamaha had a similar issue with enticer rear rattles, but i doubt that was rectified.

Bajaj did a precautionary check on all the ninjas sold and standing in stock for the crankcase leakage which was reported world wide.

These above examples include only one bike which was commuter level or mass production level, the unicorn.

- I feel for a company like HH selling over 3 lakh bikes a month, its better to include the mod in the next months production, than to recall 3 lakh bikes for the fit. Better to have it failing in the field, than recalling the product and tarnishing your brand image.

- Unless its a critical issue like a suspension failure, or brake failure i doubt there will be a recall.

- Moreover the technology involved in the current bike scenario in india ( volume segment, not performance segment ), is primitive to say the least, and has been around for ages, so chances of anything going wrong, as the above points state, are more likely in the performance segment where new technology is being attempted. And a recall or a precautionary replacement is enough to cover up for that.

my 2cents.
