Default The Secrets of Engine Run-In (Break-In)

Hi guys,

Came across this page while surfing the net. It's quite and interesting (and controversial) article on how one should use and engine during it's run-in period. Mods please make this a sticky!

Very Informative dude.. Hats Off..!!

""These same break in techniques apply to both steel cylinders and Nikasil, as well as the ceramic
composite cylinders that Yamaha uses in it's motorcycles and snowmobiles.
""

what About Hero Honda or other's except Yamaha? do these companies have same cylinders?

I really have no idea man! I just put it up here because I found it interesting. I'm riding a 20yr old Kinetic Honda DX at the moment and will be switching to a geared vehicle soon. Will definitely try it then. I really like to study how engines work (cars and bikes) and what every part does so I keep going through such pages; just thought this one might really help people.

The article mentions that it works for ALL 4-stroke engines provided you try these techniques after warming up your engine so maybe it'll work for Hero Hondas too. I mean if they all use a CV type carburettor then I suppose it'll work.

you might pursue engineering then,
because in 1st year you might learn all this.

and I would like to know clear a thing boggling inside my mind-:

On roads when we switch to 2nd gear we accelerate to full throttle or the same dyno procedure?
and what does hard deceleration means?(automatic engine one or using brakes?)

rest everything is clear.

This method, also known as the Moto-man break method has been discussed lots of times here in xbhp itself.... I dont see the point in yet another thread for this. No offense meant, piyush...

Oh! Actually I'm quite new here so I am not aware of what has and has not been discussed here. Sorry for flooding the page.

Neeraj, the article mentions that when riding on the streets, stick to 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears and alternate between short bursts of acceleration and deceleration without using the breaks. I'd suggest you read the article a little closely.

Sorry again guys!

Why do you think following the manufacturer recommendations is better? no offense but according to Moto-man the manufacturer method is actually harmful to the engine.
