Hi everyone I had posted this thread already but it did not get displayed. I do not know why. But anyway, I am posting it again.
Can you guys throw some light on the speed limits on Indian roads? In a few places on the highways I have seen the limit as 80, some places 50 and I have heard that inside the city it is 45. If this is so, are the people who go more than that breaking the law because most of the IBA folks need to maintain their speed above this mark mostly? Also, why do manufacturers create such bikes that go so much above the limit? |

Barely legal!

Sky's the limit on our roads....
literally If you go @80+ in city you will face a death penalty or lifetime impairment without going through any hassels like paperwork. and argument for manufacturers building bikes that go higher than speed limits is that you can get Arms(Gun) licence but that doesnt mean you have to kill someone

Legally speaking every stretch has a speed limit & those are supposed to be marked. Within city limits, (Chennai), speed limit of 2 wheeler is 40 Kmph, Autorickshaw is 35 Kmph, Buses are 25 Kmph.
If you want my personal opinion, this country is better than Autobahn just that you can be assured that there're no bad stretches in Autobahn, but here, you might've to be careful on that front.

No Ranjith. On Expressways, the maximum speed limit is 80 Kmph for all vehicles. But remember, that's the maximum limit, minimum is still stationary
in this country. Also not all expressways are marked for 80. If you take the Rajiv Gandhi Salai a.k.a IT Express highway a.k.a OMR road, the speed limit is only 50 Kmph. The sign board is nicely hidden by a branch of the tree. Also some stretches between Salem - Coimbatore has a speed limit of 100 Kmph & it was nice to see such sign boards

In bangalore, Ive been caught by cops for speeding when I was under the visibly marked speed limits....seems theres different speeds for different vehicles and you have to refer to some obscure barely visible board hidden behind a bush or below a billboard featuring some hot babes to see that the speed limit for bikes is lesser than whats displayed on those uniformity indicating bekabitti signs all along the roads.

From what I understand, the max is 80 in most of the highways. But our IBA guys seem to go beyond that most of the times just to complete the challenge (or thrill as some say). xBHP preaches the art of safe and responsible biking but seeing guys do this is quite disheartening. Shouldn't we do something about this?

I always maintain a speed which suits the road and the traffic conditions. It's not possible to keep looking at the speed limit sign boards every time you take a turn and go to a different road.
Riding sensibly can avoid accidents and one doesn't need to keep looking at the speed limit boards all the time. In city traffic, a speed of around 45-50 is enough for normal conditions. I don't see any reason why someone may want to ride at speeds exceeding 60 Kmph in the cities. On highways, it's wise to stay within the speed limit and the correct lane. If you ride too fast, you face the risk of accidents and if you ride too slow, the vehicles behind you will keep nagging you and (God forbid) in some cases run you over. |
