Lightbulb The hard way to getting mileage

Hey guys,
I am a proud owner of the Honda unicorn dazzler which is supposed to give a fuel economy of about 55-60 kmpl….but since I am a new rider I really dint know head or tails about the correct riding style etc….so I tried and tested many different thing and corrected many of my flaws….I used to get an avg of about 35kmpl before I tried this but now I get 50kmpl (checked it yesterday). Below I have stated wat all I used to do before and now after correcting it wat I do (pls correct me if I am wrong).

A) THE ACCELERATION PATTERN:- being a new rider I dint even know how to accelerate properly….this costed me a lot of mileage…I used to twist the accelerator till I reach a fast enough speed like 45-50 kmph and then release it and when the speed would drop to say 35-38kmph I would speed up again and release again….i would do this even if the entire road was empty. Later a friend of mine who noticed this told me that it was the wrong way to go about it. He told me to keep the accy constantly twisted and maintain the speed at about 45kmph unless the traffic in front of you stops or reduces its speed. He also told me not to accelerate abruptly and also reduce the speed gently.

B) USING THE CLUTCH AND GEARS:- one of the engineers of Honda hand once told me not to change gears and press the clutch often as it consumes a lot of fuel….he had also told me to constantly use the4th or 5th gear as long as possible… before this I used to change gears for even the smallest change in speed….he said thar the 4th and 5th gears are only meant for riding all others are just for pickup or to be used in traffic. He also told me never to use half clutch as it ruins the clutch plate.

C) CHAIN MAINTENANCE:- a friend of mine had told me to always clean and lubricate the chain at specific intervals to increase the life of the chain and smoothness of the bike…well I can say that he was completely right… always maintain your bikes chain…use oil grease or chain lube spray whatever is convenient for you…this really keeps the bike smooth and remember a smooth bike takes less efforts to accelerate.

D) AIR PREASSURE:- maintain the correct air pressure at all times…follow the prescribed pressure to achieve a good mileage….it really does work….a properly inflated tyre take less efforts to accelerate and spin.

E) SERVICE:- service your bike at regular intervals(generally 2 months or 3000kms whichever is sooner). It keeps the bike in good shape and smooth.

F) CHANGE THE OIL:-change the oil according to the usage….if u use the bike ever so often for long distance travels change it frequently(1500-2000kms) if not change it every 2 months.

G) DON’T MESS WITH THE ENGINEERING:- bikes are make with certain calculations and factors in mind…so don go around messing up your bike by modifying it and ruining it….let it retain its natural beauty and capabilities.

H) DON’T KEEP RACING THE BIKE:- racing the bike when on neutral or at traffic lights really reduces the avg….believe me I have learned it the hard way….it uses a lot of petrol which could have got u an extra 5-10 kms.

So this is about it….this was wat I learned and wat I did to get an avg of 50kmpl in city(Mumbai)…pls correct me if I am wrong and dont do the same mistakes i did.... RIDE SAFE.

A very nice and informative thread A-BLAZE.

From my side :-

1.) Never ride bike with brake lever pressed. I have seen many of them doing it. I not only gives bad mileage but also shortens engine life.

2.) If bike dont starts in the morning, make sure to keep interval of 5-6 seconds between consecutive thumb press starts or kicks.

3.) In night, if you park your bike outside your home, make sure to close the fuel tap before going in. I have seen some *** stealing petrol in bottles.

4.) Remember to put the choke on the initial position once the bike starts.

Will post more if i will get.

Ride Safe

Thumbs up

Very well written mate..

Perfect information...

Quite helpful to those who want their bikes in tip top condition!

One more add up--- I think everything starts from here

Do not get caught up in your work schedule as you might not get time for the bike and the maintenance part will be neglected....

I meant to say was all the data you mentioned is perfect and upto mark but we as bikers should have time to do all that which we miss out on most occassions...I myself have resisted at times in hurry to wipe the bike(late for office) so it should not happen. Thats all mate...rest whatever my thoughts were you penned it down perfect....

It really is a great thread...the newbies and the pro bikers would find it quite useful. Every single biker knows how to rip a machine but to maintain it to give maximun possible averagfe is an art.

Congrats bro.....
