![]() Hey guys, I have recently shifted to Delhi as I got a new job here. I am yet to like the city but i know i will eventually. Most people (from your kudewala to grey hair suitwala in a benz) are unnecessarily rude and unthankful but I guess that how one become in an Indian metropolitan city. However, one thing I do love about Delhi are the roads (at nights), they are so inviting and well lit. Anyways, the point is, i have been going around in autos, bikes and cars in New Delhi and found that the traffic signaling is very confusing. Going straight is alright but turning left or right is something I am clueless about. My house mate advised me to look out for that one light on the bottom left or right (or both sides) of main signaling tree of 3 lights. Now the thing I am confused about is… 1. When do I know if the left side is free to go? Is there a forced signaling for every left side? 2. The left or right red light signal is not lit continuously as the main red light, am I right? So how do I know if its actually a monitored signal way and whether I should stop or keep moving? Hope I am not confusing you guys as well :/ 3. Is it allowed to ride in marked bus lanes. and what about BRT corridor? 4. Are bikes allowed in DND and Delhi-Gurgaon expressway. I mean I have seen bikers on those roads but is that legal? 5. What has been your experience with Delhi police/PCR vans specially at nights? Any thing to keep note? 6. Finally how you save yourself from getting killed/rammed in Delhi traffic(specially on bikes)? Tips and advice needed 7. Can anyone advise me a good iphone 4 mount for Karizma/R15? Please suggest something that you have used yourself. 8. Is it ok and legal to use bluetooth device while riding/driving in Delhi? if yes, which device is best out there for iphone which can be easily worn inside a helmet? and yes, i forgot to mention, I work in xBhp Ride safe out there |

Well this applies in Pune too:
When you can't see a dedicated signal for a free left turn, don't take the turn. If you really need to then creep upto the zebras and take a look to spot any cops.. If they're not there then go.. But they're usually well hidden so watch out.. You lost me on the 2nd point.. About the buses - they're much safer compared to the monsters they were a decade ago. But just keep your eyes open and watch out for a speeding bus in your RVMs.. Move over to let him pass.. Ride it like its a Bentley.. That way you'll be safe enough..

Some answers from my side.
1. When do I know if the left side is free to go? Is there a forced signaling for every left side? A: Yes, for every left turn, you would find a light. It would be adjacent to the lowermost light amongst the three lights. 2. The left or right red light signal is not lit continuously as the main red light, am I right? So how do I know if its actually a monitored signal way and whether I should stop or keep moving? Hope I am not confusing you guys as well :/ A: If its lit, you can move on. 3. Is it allowed to ride in marked bus lanes. and what about BRT corridor? A: Don't know about the legal thing, but you can ride on the bus lane. But not in the BRT corridor. Its only for buses/emergency vehicles. (Although you might see some cars/bikes but it is illegal.) 4. Are bikes allowed in DND and Delhi-Gurgaon expressway. I mean I have seen bikers on those roads but is that legal? A: Yes, for the DND. Don't know about the Gurgaon waala. 5. What has been your experience with Delhi police/PCR vans specially at nights? Any thing to keep note? A. They can catchup any 'biker'..but as long as you have the necessary papers, you're fine. 6. Finally how you save yourself from getting killed/rammed in Delhi traffic(specially on bikes)? Tips and advice needed A. Ride safe. Proper gears at all times. No zig-zagging through traffic..and almost everything that you follow anywhere in the world.( Do include a small prayer every morning..its an added advantage, atleast for Delhi )PS- Welcome to the city

you cant ride in the brt lanes and on a recent enforcement drive the fine for violating it was 2000 RS . officially bikes not allowed on the ggn expressway but this rule is almost never enforced , bikes allowed on DND expressway and you have to pay toll on it .
if you ever do break some traffic rule dont try to outrun the cops . delhi police usually helpful . ride defensively and stay away from the buses ,call centre cabs ,women drivers and gramin seva autos in delhi .always use indicators and mirrors . never assume that the pedestrian or the cyclist will listen to your horn and not cross the road , they will jump at just the right time and test your bike's braking prowess . ot - heres a nice article on delhi 15 Rules Of Life In Delhi, India | MillionFace

So you must be from city of nawab's, right ????
Chill bro, nothing to be queried upon, just be cool, if you are on right side, nobody can even touch you, i bet ! ![]() If you have any misconceptions, ask that traffic police guy or auto/tsr guys ! They are really helpful in such type of situations...

Hi pulsater, welcome to Delhi!
I think I can answer a few of your questions: Bikes on DND/Gurgaon expressway: Bikes are allowed on DND toll road however this is the only toll that I have seen where bikes are charged! (Rs. 10/trip). Technically bikes are not allowed on Gurgaon expressway but this rule is never actually applied and I can tell you from practical experience that if a motorcyclist had to use only the service lanes (as they're supposed to) it would probably take 1 hour to cover what could be done in 15 mins. PCR vans: I have a bike and have never been stopped but I assume you'll have a out of state number plate so that chances of getting stopped are somewhat higher, do keep all your papers(DL, RC, Insurance, PUC) handy or brush up on your bargaining skills! I've noticed that if you stick to ring road then the chances of getting stopped are minimal so try to keep to the ring road/major road whenever possible. Staying alive in Delhi traffic: Just ride a little defensively, keep your eyes on the rear view, be on the watch out for cars that decide to suddenly stop in the middle of the road, pedestrians who want to cut across the ring road etc I know Delhi traffic can be very chaotic, but with time it'll grow on you. Happy riding and hope you enjoy your riding experiences here
