@jd666... There have been numerous tests, the most recent that i remember in TG or somewhere, that the sooner you get to top gear ( accelerating properly, not just upshifting as soon as you can ), the more efficient your driving/riding is.
The bold ones made me lol....

i have a pulsar 150 2003 model...the classic one.
i run 25 psi and 28 psi pressure in my tyres front and back respectively
i weight 60 kgs and never ride with a pillion
i upshift at 2.5k rpm and once in 5th i dont cross 2.6k rpm which equates to a speed of 40kmph. i am usually in 5th gear by the time i reach 30kmph.the throttle opening is a mere 2 -4degrees never more..
i make sure i dont lug the engine by not whacking open the throttle under high load and low rpm conditions.

the advantage of such slow riding is that no one is moving slower so automatically you dont brake much.

with this kind of riding in city conditions i consistently get 80kmpl and never below 75

the last time i checked this by the following method.
i emptied out the tank and put in exactly 2 litres.
i reset the trip meter and went on with the regular usage.
when i reached a reading of 96kms on the trip meter , i emptied the tank ....i got 800ml from it.
so i did 96 kms in 1.2 litres which is 80kmpl

Even recently, I tested my mileage by full tank to full tank method.

I'm going to a new college which is again on an open village road with sparse traffic.

I'm maintaining 50-60 kmph, which is 4-5 krpm on my bike, and I went 285 kms in 5 Litres or so. This translates to something around 56 kmpl.

Unfortunately, my pocket money has been increased but it now includes petrol costs too, so I'm being very soft on the bike.

I was thinking of doing a test to determine what riding brings what mileage, but haven't got the free time for it yet.

See, I can't test exactly. But still, based on my recent trip to Sambhar lake, what you said is true it seems.

This time, I rode around the max torque spot (65-75 kmph) and couldn't get more than 40 kmpl... its even lesser than 40. It was 310 kms for 8 litres of petrol... which comes to around 38 something.

So, it seems I get a mileage of around 56 kmpl while riding around 55 kmph, handling the throttle softly. I'll write more about this here: http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/art-safe...-new-post.html

But that's sometime after... As of now, it seems 55 kmph is ideal for my P180 UG3...

Ok.
Whatever test i've done was for upto 150cc. So cant comment much about 180.
Btw, 56kmpl on p180 is awesome. What i mostly hear is 38-40kmpl.

okay, i stick to to the rule of not exceeding 2600 rpm and i have done about 400 kms on my last refill of 5 litres and i still am getting 80 consistently. and it should increase further cuz the driving conditions will change, now that i dont need to go to this crowded area with bad roads that i used to go to. Anyways , riding for hours at 40 kmph is boring and tiring so i am considering installing a smaller sprocket so that i can do faster speeds at the same rpm of 2600. i can afford to do this since i dont need the torque/weight pulling power because i always ride alone and dont weigh much either.
even acceleration and top speed might increase
