Wink Advise for Bike Pooling with Colleague

Dear Friends,

I need some advise regarding bike pooling with one of my colleague, i am working as assistant in one company and my friend is working as engineer and he earns double my pay but still does not spend much. He lives 1/2 kms from my house, from the past 3-4 months he is coming with me regularly actually i only asked him to come with me since i get bored driving alone and if he wants to come from our home to office he has to take auto / bus + another crowded bus and 1.0 hrs time during normal and 1.5 hrs during traffic. But he did not come with me every single day many times either during coming office i go early and leave early he works late in office. But out of 24 working days on average 18-20 days he comes with me.

The past few petrol price rises has made me crib or mentally angry that why should i take him with me, as my nature is very humble and cant ask anyone directly the money / sharing etc. But yesterday as in TN here the Bus Rates increased he himself offered to share and asked my bike mileage i told him that my bike gives only 50 kmpl with double riding and will tell him afterwards that how much he needs to give me if we want to do sharing.

Now to ask him sharing i have done following calculation and will show him so that he happily agrees for sharing, he is IIT ian but does not understands simple things ,like he might even assume mileage of vehicle as 60 kmpl fix..

Now calculation as follows: distance of home - office is 20 kms so 40 kms round trip and traffic hours make it more worse, like burning of more petrol. Bike is 2006 HH super splendor and works good regular servicing of bike done at authorized HH Showroom. TIll now i never calculated how much i spend on petrol per month, just now started to maintain accounts.

ME:
now petrol is 71rs per litre n mileage is 50 kmpl so total expenditure per day comes to 71/50 x 40 = 57 Rs approx & x 24 days per month = Rs.1368/- per month i am spending.

HE:
he has to change two modes to reach office hence two options he has
share auto + bus = 10+10 = 20 x round trip (2) = 40 Rs
bus + bus = 3+10 = 13 x round trip (2) = 36 Rs every bus mode takes waiting time + crowded bus hassles etc.. so while comparing with my bike i took the best easiest mode of Rs.40/- per day which he needs to spend for little comfortable journey, still the second bus is always crowded.. and AC bus charges are 20 Rs to 22 Rs,, so he does not have option which is at par with own vehicle.
per day = 40 Rs x 24 days in month = 960/- rs per month

so R = 1368 Rs
S = 960 Rs

if we do bike pooling and i ask him 50% of my exp i.e 57/2 = 25 approx for him per day only for days which he chooses to come with me, or if im sick etc etc, , . he has to incurr Rs.25 per day so approx monthly he spends 25 x 24 days = 600 Rs only saving 360 Rs

and i end up spending 57-25 = 32 Rs per day x 24 days = 768Rs saving approx Rs.600/-

also he needs to understand that along with savings he is getting a direct transport from home to office & back because for bus you have to wait endlessly , jostlle with people spoil your ironed shirt, sweat with people, struggle to get in / out / buy ticket spend approx 90 mins as compared to quick transport of bike from point to point spending approx 45 mins only.

For me i will also save some money by bike pooling as every 3-4 months have to change oil + petty maintenance comes to 500 - 600 rs kaise bhi. and bike pooling / car pooling also environment friendly so ultimately both of us will be saving.

hope this analysis is ok or do i need to do more, hope i dont receive comments that for some petty petrol issue you do so much analysis, what to do im in accounts and view every factor seriously, also in my office there are many scientists so being with them hojata hain, har cheez ko analyze karneki adaat..

Also my friend is boy not girl agar ladki hoti to alag baat hoti you get many other benefits

please suggest your opinions / comments ...

Tell him the figure you would spend on fuel every month (Rs.1368 as per your calculation) for going to office together. Show him the calculations so he is clear you are showing the true picture.

Since he has anyway offered to share the cost, he should be willing to pay anything around INR 700 (half your monthly running cost).
But since you said he doesn't come along everyday, you might want to ask for INR 500 or INR 600 every month. And if you are uncomfortable taking cash from him for the bike polling, you can offer him to fill fuel worth that much in your bike every month.
Works well for both of you

PS: Why worry about what he would pay if he came by auto+bus. That is his headache, & he surely wants to avoid it (coz he is happy riding pillion with you).

Why not just tell him to give you a couple of cases of beer each month?

This way everyone is happy 1 case=Rs 280 x 2 = Rs 560, as he doesn't travel with you everyday this should even things out and your FE will go down with a pillion.

Tell him that based on your calculation, average mileage including maintenance you spend about Rs.1500 every month(i.e an average of Rs.70 per day for going and coming for 21days that he may travel with you).
Before you demand for any money ask him how much he would like to share of the above incurred expense. A decent 500-600rs. offered by him is good enough.
Keep it simple, don't start giving all huge assumptions and calculation reasons, then he would think you have meticulously planned to extract money.

There is one more option
Keep the Habit of filling the fuel every day or on alternate days. As soon as you enter in to the fuel station he will come to know he has to pay the half and will surely share.

Pls. remind your friend that YOU do all the hassles of riding through traffic and he sits in the comfort of pillion seat. That might incur atleast additional 1K for him I suppose..
