Scenario 1: It was a late evening and i was returning from work when i heard the blaring of an ambulance coming up behind me and there was a huge traffic jam ahead. I moved over to the left and gave way to the ambulance. The ambulance was stuck up in the traffic ahead. I was behind the ambulance and even though there was place enough for a car in front of me and towards its left, i did not move. Suddenly, the guy behind me starts honking. First i ignored him. And when he repeated that again, i turned to him and said "I wont move. Cant you see there is an ambulance up ahead and it might move left?" The driver gave me a look as though he would have killed me if i had not moved into the vacant space ahead and said "SO WHAT?". I actually wanted to get off my bike right there and slap him on his face but I stayed my ground and let the ambulance move ahead before i started the bike again.

Scenario 2: Its a morning rush hour and i hear an ambulance speeding up from behind. As usual, i move to the left and give way to the ambulance and in the process come to almost a stand still. Once again the incident is repeated where the car behind me honks and as soon as the ambulance passes, he moves to overtake me and follow the ambulance in front of him but does not forget to give me a tough look while passing by me.

Scenario 3: Another evening rush hour and loads of traffic. An ambulance is speeding up from behind. The traffic is held up because a company is letting out their cars and buses from the exit gates. I race up ahead and stop right in front of the gate and the security guy at the gate starts shouting at me. I point him to an ambulance and he keeps quiet. However, a few cars do think that i was doing something wrong and move to the other side to come out of the office.

These are just a few incidents that I have witnessed in the ever increasing number of ambulances moving on the road everyday. Have people become so insensitive towards patients and fellow human beings? Or is it just the lack of driving sense when you are being pursued by the ambulance or for that matter any emergency vehicle.

I wonder how anyone would feel if their loved one was in the ambulance and they were following it. They might just scream at every damn car and bike on the road. I have gone through this pain and i know exactly how it feels.

I would like to bring forward a few points here which HAVE TO be observed when an ambulance is behind you. These are a few things im sure everyone knows but still, i want to bring them forward to all.

1. As soon as you hear an ambulance, look into the rear view mirrors. It could be coming from any direction of the road. Judge based on the traffic behind you where you would need to move.

2. ALWAYS use indicators so that the ambulance driver is aware of the direction where you would be moving.

3. NEVER attempt to follow an ambulance. You might drive across the road and cut through the traffic once in a while but the ambulance drivers do that throughout the day and whenever they drive. They are trained to cut through every single opening they see. Its hard to chase them on 2 wheelers. 4 wheels dont stand a chance.

4. If the ambulance is stuck up in traffic, DO NOT pull up to either of its sides. Wait behind it. Leave a cars width on both the sides.

5. The worst i have noticed are cab drivers. They use their experience and try to speed behind them. If you are in one such cab, ask the cab driver to slow down.

The other members, please add on to this if you can think of something. Its absolutely hurts to see drivers and riders who are well educated not following all this. After all, there are lives at risk.

Farooq, I really respect when someone like you who gives the thought and way for something which is so so important. I think you are from Bangalore/Hyderabad, where there are some really good public/private ambulance services which are actually of world class standards but they just can not perform efficiently because of traffic and ignorance of drivers/riders.

In Delhi too, I once had an ambulance with sirens on, coming from back on the fast lane but giving way to the ambulance was challenging as no one else would even care to move a little side. I had to dangerously squeeze in on the left between two fast moving cars to make some room for the ambulance. But obviously the car ahead of me on the fast lane didn't even bothered.

Ofcourse, it is very obvious and human to give such emergency vehicles a priority and right of way when ever you see them, but having said that, you will be surprise to know that many drivers and riders dont even know that they need to give way to emergency vehicles. Many people have never been told/taught to do what they should do in such situation. There are hundreds of thousands of violations of traffic rules in our cities but I wouldn't blame it totally on the people on road but also to those who give them the right to be on road. Our licensing system and traffic sense is the world's worst and should be changed with high priority.

Yes guys, we must give pass to emergency vehicles ASAP whenever possible. Period.
For this i've got some recommendations to respective authorities:-
* licence to drive/ride should not be provided to candidates untill they graduate respective tests & exams. (awareness is the key)
* emergency vehicles should be equipped with more flashy lights/ louder sirens & beckons. (like we see in holiwood movies)
* vehicles who dont let these pass/cause blockage should be fined.

I would understand if an illiterate does that. But what is disappointing to see is that people who are well educated and managers working in IT firms drive this way.

The system needs to be changed. Agreed. The first thing i want to see changed is the fine system. Rs.100 for breaking a signal or crossing the stop line would mean NOTHING for a person driving a 10 lakh car. This is not the case in many other countries. The huge fines make people disciplined. Increase the fines and make them strict.

One more suggestion would be to give the emergency vehicle drivers control of the traffic signals where they can remotely change the signal to green while approaching a signal that is red because no one would stop at their green signal to give way to an ambulance.

Misconception; its the ENFORCEMENT that make people disciplined & not huge fines. Probably you can say small to moderate for the first offense & gets more severe on multiple offenses.

i have a question here too..
I have seen accidents happening on the higways and trust me they are nasty.
Well what i dont understand is why does the person involved in the accident keep arguing there right in the middle of the road and ensure the entire route is clogged behind.

Also i would like to know what needs to be done when one faces with such situations from two point of views -
1)Involved in accident
2) Passer by

Please answer these two questions because this is happening on daily basis and touch wood iam not involved in the first case. But yes lot of times the number 2 case has happened right in front of me...

They park their vehicles in the lane where the hit has taken place, they do not even move an inch. I know somewhere this is related to insurance but this is the highway... Please correct me if iam wrong.

My 2 cents...
Call the Police...immediately. Even before you get down from your car OR as soon as you pick up your ride. It helps you from a mob attack or theft which is more important than justice.

Pull over & call up the Police or the emergency number put up on the highway
