Question Get off the bike& take off helmet, while Refuelling !!!

I dont know if such a thread already exists,I couldnt find one.
Since last 4 days, while refuelling, the attendant is telling me to Get off the bike, and take my helmet off ,then only he take the order. [No he is not looking for any suspect ,as he know me very well,as i am filling petrol from this bunk for last 5 years].
When I asked him,why so, he replied its order from the top .He has no Idea why is it going on.
Can any one help me know the reason ?

A similar drill is followed at all Shell Bunks since the day I first went to one (back in 2009).

I heard about an incident where a petrol bunk caught fire due to a customer who was probably smoking or something(i heard even phones can start a huge fire)...

In case of a fire, its better to run than be sitting on a bike with an open fuel tank

I dont understand why they have asked you to remove the helmet but in shell they dont ask that...
They ask their customers to get down from the vehicle and NOT use the cell phone...

Nice thread! I haven't been asked of this so far though I haven't gone and filled in a Shell bunk at least for my bike.

There could be many reasons.

Security: They may have received complaints that bikers fill and zoom away? :P

Or Could be - in case of an accident, just drop your bike and run like hell.

Take off the helmet: Possibly there are cctv cameras and as a security precaution - capture the faces of all who fill up.

Just my thoughts.

@Shell in Nasik / Pune, We are told to get off the bike, put the bike on main stand, and stand besides the bike but not remove the helmet (though I take it off anyways). Same thing even if you have get the tire pressure checked.

It's the norm in a number of HP bunks in Mumbai as well... at least the ones that I usually use... in Sion and Sewree.

Thats news to me. Been filling fuel in my bikes sitting on top with the helmet on my skull for last 17 years.Maybe some one drove/rode away after filling and did not pay up so as a precautionary measure.
