Default Discussion : Mobile Phones and biking

Case 1 : xMan bunnyPunia uses his reliance handset while riding his ZMA with one hand. He does not feel any need to stop and then attend the call, lest he might miss it. Agreed he is a good rider and can control the bike, but accidents dont happen when you are in control anyways!

Case 2 : xMan Sunny lost his 14,000 bucks cellphone when he took a sharp turn at high speed on his bike. The phone was in his pocket. He knew it was going to fall but couldnt save it lest he lost the control of the bike. And at this particular instance the phone wasnt even ringing.

Case 3: xMan Sunny takes out his mobile camera phone to shoot the brand new ZX9r which just zipped past him. He must be at least on 80kmph. Luck is with him he doesnt fall and he is able to take blurred pics and go one handed admist the heavy traffic for at least 1 km.

There are innumerable cases of which I simple dont know of and which have been more stupid and fatal, especially to bikers. Most of the handsets come with handsfree still most of us dont use it. Why? With the advent of camera phones this has got to be even more dangerous. Us bikers are always looking out for exotic vehicles to shoot on the road, even if it means single handed daredevling. Well you cant mess with luck and nature boy, you never know when they turn against you!

There are more intricate details to be looked upon, like if you set you mobile on vibration mode, it means that you will get a litlle distracted wven ehen it rings, or even when it doesnt you can get many false alarms are the vibrations from the bike get carried on to your legs - the 'back of my mind' thing gets into play.

I cant afford to list down the many dos and donts at once, why not carry on this disscussion further and make it worthwhile for everyone to read and follow.

How do u guys manage to use your cell phone with your helmet on ?

My helmet is so snug, that I can hardly push my cell phone to my ear.

in any case, I have lost a $100 cell phone while I was going 70mph on the freeway. It jst flew out of my top left pocket, but nevertheless I have NEVER tried talking on the phone and riding @ the same time (unless I was @ a stop light).. (c'mon dude.. aint NO call dat important, Even God can wait for a few mins !!)

intersting topic

Well considering how the last topic was closed coz it was too hot, this should be relatively benign! Anyways, I for one have always thought that using a cell while driving a car was bad enough - "hands free" or not! But bikes and cell phones! Thats a sure fire recipe for disaster! For one thing it reduces your concentration while riding a hell of a lot! We all know about the kid or woman who gets a sudden urge to run across the road, the stupid car driver who thinks he is the king of the road and not to forget DTC - Delhi's own way of dealing with population control! So unless we are tired of livin' we should ALWAYS pull over, get off the bike, kick the side stand down, flick open the cell and chat away!

@Sunny: trying to chase a ZX9r with one hand on the throttle in DL traffic?? I assume you must be wanting to live relatively unmaimed for another few years at least ?

i have used a cell by jamning it between my face and the helmet.. but i have lost a real expensive pair of shades while riding.. the darn sunglasses fell out of my top pocket.. those were beneton f1 special edition shades.. (the time when beneton sponsored a formulla car is when they had em out..)

When bikeCrazy ( kunal ) visited india i was aghast at the 'snugness' of the helmet, it was way too tight for me, i couldnt even manage to slip in my specs! forget a cell! of course i understand the need of such helmets while riding at high speeds, which we cant experience on out mopeds!

Out here in india.. we hardly do 70mph everyday (most ppl dont).
And a lot of ppl dont wear helmets.. at least not all the time..
I shud say even i am guilty of that act.. i try to wear it as much as I can..
So u see talkin on the fone isnt that much of an issue.. its the consequences that are..

very rightly put sunny, and i too confess that my mobile camera phone is full of pics taken while riding too, that is riding with one hand and the other taking the pics. it dangerous i know, i do realize but cant resist it. but from now on will try to change that........... and as for riding while talking on phone, well never done it and have no plans to do so either........

@ehud : no sweetie pie, i didnt try, i succesfully chased it. u wont be able to see half the pics on this website if i wont be taking the risk buddy, not that i am saying its sane. And most importantly if u have even seen a SBK in traffic u should know that they ride it slow as a turtle - heh, back to the discussion ahem.!

@Sunny: well Sunny sweetheart (alliteration for you!) i admire your courage, foolhardy though it may be! Yeah I agree with you, those SBK riders ride as though their bikes are made of glass.
