The exhaust sound of an R1 is the result of 4 cylinders firing in a syncronous order together. Hence its got that growl. Also the valves and cam design can influence the sound a bit not to mention the actual exhuast.

Similarly a v-twin has its own sound.

A single cylinder low capacity engine can never produce that sound no matter which exhaust you use.
