Exclamation Loud Pipes Save Lives

I had an old thread on how loud pipes can save motorcyclists.

Anyways that debate can be revived again and is worth reviving.

With the tall SUVs and monster vehicles such as trailers and reckless ST buses on the Highway - a puny motorcycle is never noticed until it is too late.

Plus cage drivers enjoy the loud music on their stereo player and talk on the phone and continue driving irresponsibly on the road.

For a motorcycle rider - all this can mean death - WHY ? - because he is unnoticed and gets bumped or run over since cage drivers are not aware of the motorcycle in the vicinity.

I had earlier posted a Bikernet Independent study on how loud pipes save lives. Then Oakland Police started using loud pipes after the death of their fellow patrolling rider on duty.

THE NEW DATA from Oakland Police legal fight to save lives is here:
Oakland Police Choose Loud Pipes

This is true for 2 wheelers as we are at risk from careless - BLIND - cage drivers who won't see your bike until it goes under their wheels.

I stay pretty close to Oakland. Well...here most of the bikes have aftermarket pipes.

But, Riding in California and in , say, Maharastra is pretty different. Guys riding SUVs in CA are not used to see much bikes on the road. Very very few ppl ride here...and most of guys don't know anything about motorcycles. When dirving their car on the streets they are looking out for cars not for the bikes.

Most of the ppl in india are used to drive their car with bikes on the road. They do notice bikes on the road.

Loud pipes might get you noticed, but in a lot of instances it might scare the shit out of alot of people as well. I once almost shat my pants when I hear this late 90s SBK coming out of KRP on the ring road suddenly accelerated behind me while I was in an auto - full squid - but definitely startled me!!!

It's a very fine edge to walk, loud pipes - sometimes it works, othertimes it might actually result in a scared driver doing something stupid once scared!

With all due respect, its fundamentally flawed. Cliched and maybe works in the west but is a ghastly source of irritation to other bikers in stuck traffic, and with even bikers listening to FM, I don't see the point really.

Take a ride in a volvo/car/whatever.

Yes, its great for attention whoring, but that's about it.

Louder pipes for getting noticed are definitely not the way to go, in India at least.
Already so much honking and "shor sharaba", louder bikes will lead to noise pollution only, nothing else.
As far as the "getting noticed" point is concerned, I feel if a person is driving irresponsibly, he can even leave a louder bike unnoticed.

I agree with this.
So you two are saying that all of us should drive IRRESPONSIBLY in order to get noticed and thus save our lives by driving irresponsibly ?

Think again !!!

You didn't get his point .. please read again ..

He meant drivers 'driving' cars irresponsibly might ignore even the loudest thing on the road.

Any normal person would know that US and India (or SE-Asian countries) are at opposite ends of the spectrum with respect to motorcycling. Most of their studies and surveys on the US road and riding conditions just don't apply here.
