Hi guys,
Fuel injection is of two types and ECU's are of two types. First closed loop, in short open loop is similar to carbs. How in carbs there are jets(pilot, main) and when the throttle is pulled the carb sucks the fuel and and mixes and injects it into the engine. In normal carb fuel is decided according to the position of throttle. In open loop FI instead of carbsucking and creating pressure the fuel pump creates pressure and the injectors inject the fuel done by jets in carbs. In open loop the ECU is given throttle and rpm input according to which it decides the amount of fuel which is predetermined and does not change in different atmospheres. The fuel entering the engine atomizes and mixes with the air better, hence a better combustion resulting in better fuel economy and throttle response. On the other hand in closed loop system there is a formula whose values are determined by various sensors, and one of the most important being Lamba(O2) sensor and engine temperature.Hence these are better in terms of performance and fuel economy bacause they work real time calculating the amount of fuel rather than looking up in the table and responding. But because of complexity of the ECU and more number of sensors the cost of these closed loop system is more. The best way to find out if the FI is closed or open loop is to examine the entire exhaust pipe from the engine all the way to the end can.I think all the Hero Honda bikes(and Honda) FI bikes have closed loop system. Even in closed loop systems there are two types of injection,Direct injection and throttle body injection./in throttle body injection the fuel is injected in throttle body which mixes with air and then is sent to the engine. In direct injection there is another sensor ie. crank position sensor, this sensor help the ECU to know when the valve will open and hence the fuel and air is directly injected into the engine rather than throttle body.Hence this results into even better fuel economy and throttle response(but this throttle response is better felt in the midrange. But u cant tell from the outside(without removing some body parts) easily that whether the bike is TBI or direct injection

There's actually more types of Fuel injection than mentioned, there's single point throttle body injection (same location as a carb), there's multi point injection (injects fuel right at the intake valve), and there direct injection (injects directly into the cylinder). The last variant is still rare, and is now becoming available on cars.
On bikes here in India (excluding CBU SBKs) there's only one injector and it's generally located at the intake valve. Single point injection vs Multi point injection is only for multi cylinder engines. To make things more complicated there's sequential and batch injection. In sequential injection the injector fires only for the intake stroke, for batch injection it will fire also during the power stroke (two injection events worth half the amount of fuel required). Not sure which is available here, but probably a single injection event for each cycle. And there's only two bikes that currently have closed loop FI, HH ZMR & the baby kwacker. All others run on open loop FI. It's easy to distinguish also, if there's a sensor attached to the exhaust a short distance away from the engine (the lambda sensor) then it's probably closed loop. Also closed loop injection only helps for emissions, by tuning the AFR to be optimal for the catalytic converter. It does not really help in getting better throttle response. |

So what is the final conclusion ? Can K&N be put to ZMR without any hassles of manual AFR adjustment ?

Long answer: Since there will be more air rushing into the engine, it will be running lean. If you ride within the closed loop region of the fuel injection system, it may or may not be able to adjust the amount of fuel required (probably not). When at high throttle openings or high load the FI system drops out of closed loop and will run open loop, meaning it will inject fuel as per a preset table, which means it will run lean if you have a K&N filter installed. To fix all this you would need to update the ECU fuel maps of the FI system, which is not easy and probably not possible with the factory ECU. If you want you ZMRs engine to have a long life, don't install a K&N filter OR free flow exhaust. |

Less back pressure means retuning the carb/fi, and hence cannot be done on our FI's without remapping ECU's so its not recomended.
