For GPS anti theft systems check here. But I'm not sure the availbility & usefulness in India.
I use Garmin eTrex Vista HcX which is a very good GPS. I loaded it with Indian City Navigator Maps (though little costly). I find it pretty useful since I mainly used it while hiking & trekking as well as now while riding. lots of options & with Mapsource you can transfer the data to Google earth. I bought it for 11K..about 3 yrs back.
Check out Garmin India website, now plenty of other good options are also available.

  • First of all, of course, get the phone. I am using a Nokia 6210 Navigator.
  • Ditch the Nokia Maps software, it's useless outside the 4-5 cities that are provided there.
  • Download MGMaps and install it on your phone
  • Go to the site Mobile GMaps - Map Tile Caching tools, download and install gMapMaker on your computer.
  • Go to www.mapcacher.com and select the area whose map you require, the map type, detail level and zoom levels required. Yahoo India road maps has the best coverage. Sinlge clicks are used to mark the area boundary. Clicking on generate will ask you to save a .map file.
  • Run gMapMaker and select the option "MGMaps mode, use a .map file" and click Go. Locate the .map file in your computer and let the apllication download map tiles for a while in the output directory specified.
  • Copy the output to your phone card and start MGMaps. In Settings, go to Map Browsing and tick Stored Maps and Offline Mode. Browse to the directory where you copied the maps and save the settings. Restart application.
  • Navigate to the area whose map you just copied.
Would this be helpful for touring???i mean are the maps very detailed and on my nokia n97 would i be able to get voice directions??

Thumbs down Odisha listed under other country in v7.0 maps of MMI!

A few days back, I got my MapMyIndia Lx130 navigator successfully updated to the new v7.0 maps. Now, the new maps show foot-prints of buildings including my home with door number. In the previous version, it didn't show those finer details.

Today, I was testing the navigator by searching some PoI in Assam, West Bengal and Odisha. To my horror, I could not locate Odisha in the list of states. For that, I need to go on this path: Select country>Other>Odisha to search PoI/towns/villages/street address in that state. In the earlier version, it was not so. I don't know, how many countries I have to select to access different states in India in the future upgrades of MMI maps.

I informed MMI about this goof-up. That customer support lady was arguing that if there is no problem, what do you want us to do? I told her point blank that Odisha is part and parcel of India, and so, it should be listed with the other states in India and not under other country! Then she agreed and noted down my contact number and navigator details. To be on the safer side, I sent an email also to the MMI customer support.

The input is through touch-screen from the available list of states of India, wherein neither Orissa nor Odisha finds a place! There is no option available in my MMI Lx130 navigator to type for selecting the state. In the previous version, Orissa was indeed included in the main list.
