Default Of Xenophya, Bullet Classic and Bajaj Auto

First off, all credit to this awesome blog by Sameer Kumar, here's the link where he's posted an interview with Mark Wells and Ian Wride of Xenophya Design.

www.fasterandfaster.net

Here are the most interesting bits of the interview of which I had to have a say on.

"A 250cc concept bike designed for a bike manufacturer based in India..." says Sameer.

The client list, though a major part of it is confidential, mentions Bajaj Auto. It wouldn't be pretentious to assume this concept, the fairing more importantly resembles our Pulsar 220. I vaguely remember Rajiv Bajaj insisting that the tank of the Pulsar is its most characteristic bit and hence I'm assuming the front half fairing was creased to flow with the tank design. I might be wrong, since I also remember that Glynn Kerr was the design consultant for Bajaj Auto when designing the P220, so if anybody else have better ideas, do pen it down here. So this belief built on assumptions, gives me one reason to worship Xenophya.

Then, this, her, it, whatever. Reason number two, to worship Xenophya!

More recently the Royal Enfield Bullet Classic was great fun. Being British, it was a real opportunity for us to work on an old British brand which is one of the longest in continuous production. Royal Enfield really recognise the value in their brand and have made a real effort to embrace it and retain the heritage which I think shows in the product. It also meant we got to travel to India and were introduced to their domestic market which is now a key part of our business.
I'm sure they've nothing to do with the fact that we can't buy the Classic in India, so spare them the brickbats.

We were at the Delhi Auto Expo in January last year and the atmosphere on the Yamaha stand was truly electric – it reminded me of the excitement I felt the first time I visited a motorcycle show as a school boy.
Ok. So they were here. Did Bike India or any other mag mention Xenophya anywhere? I'm not sure, so if anybody does remember an article, please let me know.

Coming to the point. They were here. Wouldn't it have been awesome if they had interacted with aspiring designers in this country? Who do you think should take responsiblity for organizing stuff like that? Should we leave everything to NID and sit back with a cuppa? Something has to be done to grab all those last-page-of-maths-classwork-doodler and drop them into formal training as early as 15. We sell so many bikes in this country and yet most of them are drab contraptions that would push all your blood to your head unlike those Italian beauties that push the blood, er.. somewhere below your waist line.

Talking about Italian design,

Quote:
European design is self-proclaimed as being more passionate and creative, however the truth is the Japanese are every bit as enthusiastic, passionate and creative. The Italians are particularly good at shouting about ‘Italian Style.’ They aren’t so keen on telling everyone that the designers in these companies responsible for some of the memorable models are often not Italian. In truth, most design studios are very multinational environments with teams of engineers and designers from all over the world contributing to the final product. At Xenophya, we regularly employ a network of design professionals from all over the world.
That to me is a revelation! I thought all those pretty lines on the Ducatis came from years of eating authentic Pizza and drowning your hair in Olive Oil! Come to think of it, it should have been obvious. Designers work towards keeping the spirit of the brand alive and kicking in their design. Designs influenced by their roots is more of a hobby than part of occupation is what I would guess.

Again, due credit to Sameer Kumar for his awesome blog, one thats updated as regular as clockwork compared to what other journos do with their blog.

Faster and Faster

Other 250cc concepts designed for 'that' bike manufacturer based in India...

^ I find the Bajaj link very thin. Because somehow Glynn Kerr[who works with Motovisions] and Xenophya don't gel well!

Moreover there was a faint news i remember,Mahindra-Kinetic hiring an Italian/European design studio. A big hmmm there!

I was shocked to see the Fischer(Glynn Kerr design) in Xenophya pages.A lit bit of search revealed that they were called only for clay model design.

Why the shock MG_biker?? In the artilcle they say,

"Working on the Fischer MRX650 was our first experience on a full bike. We were contacted in 2003 by Glynn Kerr, who needed help in building the clay model and subsequent model for the Indianapolis show. The design was done entirely by Glynn but working with him and the chaps at Gemini Racing in Milwaukee taught us a lot."

it seems that they are students of Guru Glynn, according to me, there must be a gel between them.

I also found this British Design Innovation

"At a weeks notice a clay modeller flew to Milwaukee, USA for 7 weeks. In this period a concept sketch was taken to full scale appearance model.

The Fischer MRX was designed by renowned motorcycle stylist Glynn Kerr. Our specialist worked alongside Glynn and the staff at Gemini Technology Systems Wisconsin facility to turn Glynn's vision into a reality to be shown at Indianapolis Motorcycle Show 2004."

Again, due credit to Sameer Kumar for posting this in his blog.

Did you guys notice the engine design on the three bikes is the same?
Secondly, the one with the red fairing - look close and examine the front side of the fairing - the headlight. It looks a lot like that of the Pulsar 220 (vertical). Also, the exhaust shield of this bike looks quite a like that of the Pulsars. Is Bajaj really go be getting something as radical as thing? OMG!

These bikes have a resemblance to KTM.
The white Mantis concept looks much like a 690 Duke.
The rear swingarm, brake pistons and the rear mudguard resembles KTM.

The black streetbike has a Bajaj tank most probably[Discover like].
The sportsbike sucks big time.It is so high placed,it can easily go off road!

I have some feeling these ain't Bajaj.
