Default How about a diesel engine in modern day bikes?

I'm very much indulged in this kind of thought for quite a longer time, i fancy very much on diesel engines . too mad about disel engines not because its highly economical wrt fuel charges , but of its immensive power.

I'm not aware whether there were (past) , there are(present) disel engines used in bikes. but if there be a disel engine used in modern day bikes how powerful would we like it to be . i'm also quite aware of the its huge space occupying nature , but still if it be present how nimble ,powerful and economical would we like it to be.

also i would also like to know which company would we look forward the most to introduce such innovative and bold ideas in biking industry. i have also provided a poll flagged over this thread kindly have look at it and cast ur options in it

with regards,

I Also heard of a 800cc Triple Cylinder Diesel bike, that made just 54 bhp, but its Torque was way high at 150 NM. This was sometime back in 2007.

Say if a 800cc gives 50 bhp, what do you expect a 100cc to give? 4-5 bhp at the most ...? Moreover, Fuel Injection is a costly technology, but a compulsory one for Diesel Engines.

You see, such engines are very torquey, and can't give a relatively high amount of power for a particular cc, compared to Petrol Engines. Although for Cruisers, it makes sense though.

BTW A guy named Balu is changing the world with his Diesel & Bio Fuel Enfields, with his group Bulletwallas... See this site:-->

The World According to Bulletwallas: April 2009

He says that the guys at Enfield are not supporting him, despite a great machine & plan... So, I guess it won't make it to production ...

there was a commercial diesel engine bike that was launched in the 90's or 80's..just seen one, don't know the manufacturer..it went past and i thought that a tractor had passed..just turned my head to go ...diesel engines require a lot of money and r&d and turning them into bikes is not economically sound...also they require a lot of maintenance and pollute heavily..and apart, hardly produce any power compared to their weight...may be dats y no super car has diesel engine but suv's do coz of their torquey nature...
And not to forget the sweet massage that they would give to ur wrists...we cry for apache being so vibey, wonder wat wud u do regarding them

PS: there's no honda in the poll...

A company in Germany has developed a Turbo Diesel based bike. Its called the Neander and is one of my dream bikes.

Take a look at the link below.

Royal Enfield used to produce diesel bullets called Taurus. You'll find them in the rurals around Coimbatore and Harayana. The engines were Greaves engines, and much of everything else was directly from the Bullet.

Cheers!

The Royal Enfields used to make Diesel bulls.
We had 2 of them at home. My dad and his twin brother. one each.
Both were sold off at a later stage...
I've ridden them, God they vibrate like crazy and trust me they will definitely make me impotent.
But the mileage was so so high...!!!

A diesel engine will be great on a bike. Hope some maker comes up with this.
The tech involved in modern diesel like the common rail direct injection is quite expensive, however with series production it cam be brought down.
A 500cc diesel with a turbo and common rail injection is easily capable of over 50bhp. Thats already 100bhp/ltr. And they'll produce enough torque to scare you.

Why doesn't the poll contain the Royal Enfield name? After all there used to be a Diesel Bullet available! Maybe another one could come up with better technology!

IMO
i hate diesels no matter how much torque they produce . they are powerful only because they are turbocharged . drive a non turbo indica and you will know . if you take two 2000cc engines one petrol and one diesel . turbo them both . no prizes for guessing which one would make more power .

if you think from a non-enthusiast's point of view yes it makes sense .

I call this wishful thinking. How easy is it to sit at home and type on the keyboard. I want a nuclear reactor on my bike so 1 gram of uranium in the fuel tank will outlast the bike. And what I like even more is you selected a bunch of manufacturers that you “expect” a diesel bike from.
Enfield had a mono pod diesel that made a little less power than the luna. Since your an engine fanatic I’m sure you know that they run 20+:1 compression ratio so they’d have to be built strong and that combined with expensive fuel injection systems would total a pricetag no sensible consumer would be willing to accept. No disrespect but..I see a few words like powerful and nimble
