Default Farewell BMW R1100RT & Welcome my new R1200GS

Yes friends, it is with mixed feelings that I am writing this post. On one side it was a very sad and almost tearful farewell to a trusty bike that has been my riding companion for almost 10 years. This bike just did not mean two-wheeled fun for me, but also symbolized my personal achievements & goal of acquiring the bike of my dreams. One that fit me like a glove. One that gave me least of troubles. One that never broke down nor left me stranded on the highway. Rain or Shine this one never complained and was always ready for any task. It was like a family member to me. Besides, it was the first BMW bike on which many of my friends rode pillion. Back in 1996, this was a very advanced bike with Fuel Injection, ABS, Tele-lever/Para-lever suspension etc etc (I was among the first owners of a fuel injected/ABS bike in Saudi Arabia). But sadly, any machine with all its past glory has its defined purpose and I have to let it go since I wanted to meaningfully upgrade to a different kind of machine with a new purpose that I have set and hence it is beyond my means to care for or even find the time to ride 2 beemers. I’ll always miss you my ‘Blue Whale’ (just as I still miss my first flame- the legendary RD350). The new owner, I hope will take care of her well.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION- Enter the dashing red R1200GS. I’ll name her the ‘Red Ruby’. Yes, the GS- the big daddy of adventure touring bikes or the SUV of bikes. Its very tall, its capable, its agile and its got character. Although my new bike is a 2005 model (same bike was featured in my BMW tutorial thread My tutorial on BMW bikes (many many pics!) ), long story short, somebody originally paid an advance and never came back and so it remained with the dealer. It has been in my heart for almost 2 years and the dealer being a good friend unofficially reserved it for me! But letting go the old trusty RT and also the shortage of funds due to the economic slowdown delayed the purchase decision. Finally, last week it happened - Here I am; the first owner with 0km on the odo and I also get a 2 year warranty on the bike and not to mention a sweet price deal (lets keep that under wraps!). I am a rider who values his bike and god willing I plan to keep it with me for a long time like the RT. The pictures are as she left the showroom and on my way home, but I have a few things lined up to ‘farkle’ her to my personal taste. I shall update you when the farkle is complete.

Now I have begun the ‘tough task’ of engine break-in formality. The manual says not to exceed 120km/h or 4000rpm for the first 1000kms. However I am doing something different as per this link
http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm
(shhhhh, don’t tell my dealer or he’ll cut my warranty).

The sad send-off....

Initial impressions & first ride report will follow shortly with pics ofcourse!

Thanks Ken. That approval was super fast.
Yeah, I will be taking some more pics and shall give the specs of the bike. BTW, my engine break-in is almost done. Already done 822kms in the first week of purchase.

Thanks Kirankumar, MotorBreath & gd76.
Yeah, MotorBreath, the old RT sure looks outdated (afterall rarely do BMW designs turn heads). But, that bike easily has another 10-15 years of reliable service for its next owner.

Some More photographs and Ride report would serve as icing on the cake,But the thing I love most about 1200GS is the Light, It is different in its own way. Some like and some dont..
But it looks amazing when you switch between your Beams!!!

Wonderful! Keeping an eye to get the Ride report, would love to hear!

Cheers
