my take on this is that there is got to be more to it, i mean this cant be a case of tax evasion only. Had it been that i am sure it would have not been difficult for the owner to find a buyer who would be willing to take the bike for a fraction of the original price even if it meant that the bike came without any papers. The fact that the bike has simply been dumped could mean that it might have been stolen or involved in some accident....

PS: just a thought how many of us xbhpian's would be willing to buy such a bike for say a lakh or so assuming the bike is not involved in accident and is only a case of duty evasion?

i wud have gladly bought and kept it in my farm house in punjab.

Revenue Intelligence unable to trace 500 imported motorbikes

Of 628 summons issued by the department to registered bike owners, over 500 returned as un-served; DRI seeks RTO help the find vehicles

RAVIKIRAN DESHMUKH

The investigation into the imported bike scam – unearthed by Department of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) early this year – has hit another roadblock. Of the 628 summons issued by the DRI to bike owners, over 500 have returned as un-served, only to prove that the registrations of these vehicles with the RTO were bogus.
In 44 cases – where the owners could be identified – 25 bikes have been registered at the Pen RTO (dist Raigad) and 19 at the Andheri RTO, including the two-wheelers owned by Bollywood star Ajay Devgan, directors Rohit Shetty and Sanjay Gupta.
When contacted, Parag Desai, who is spokesperson for Ajay Devgan and Rohit Shetty told this paper that all the formalities with regards to the vehicles had been completed.
“We have paid all duties and the bikes were with the respective owners,” he said.
Meanwhile, a comprehensive list with details of the bikes, prepared by DRI, reveals that most of the two-wheelers are believed to have been registered under false names.
Out of these, at least 10 bikes each have been registered in the names of a Viral Mehta and a Bharat Shah. Three other bikes have been registered in the name of a Hemal Ghelani, while two others against a certain Thirunavukkarash Pichapillai.
The DRI – in its letter dated October 15 – has requested the State Transport Commissioner to locate the untraceable bikes, so that it can recover octroi, customs, and transport duty from the owners.
New imported bikes attract customs duty of 60 per cent. Old two-wheelers, however, are subject to 100 per cent duty, especially to discourage dealers from importing new bikes by calling them ‘second hand’, but then selling them at full international prices.
Spare parts attract just 10 per cent duty. All the 652 bikes in the scam were imported as spare parts and assembled in Mumbai, before being sold as new.
According to State Transport Commissioner Deepak Kapoor – following the DRI letter – the department has formed special squads under the Thane and Andheri RTO and a directive has been issued to trace the bikes.
“Officers have been told to seize the vehicles; lodge an FIR; recover the mandated taxes and duties and inform DRI. Our deadline stands at November 30, and we will hold a meeting to review the action taken till then,” he said.
CASE STATS
Total number of summons issued:
628
Bikes identified as registered with RTOs Pen RTO: 25 Andheri RTO: 19
Total number of bike owners not yet identified: 608

I am feeling really sad for the Boulevard. Sad that, it had to meet such a bad fate.

Well, I guess we should NOT be calling names to the owner who dumped it.

first, He was Clever enough to get it the wrong way , save some money on the cost of buying it.

Second, when it came to people and vehicles being picked up by DRI, we was wiser to let go off that 5-10 Lac rs. worth of Machine. Anything for one's @$$ you see.

Well, if were any smarted he could have dismantled the entire bike, kept the engine safely with him etc...and in case if he had the guts and the passion to build a bike out of one's own creation, he could have used the mighty engine. But not everyone is the same, guess he was one of those Rich Poser Guys!

P.S: That makes me think, a Lot ( and Not everyone, mind it!) bought Busa after Dhoooooom! Did Suzuki company paid anything to the film producer, or did the company appreciate the publicity done by the Film...
