Exclamation yamaha r1:which is better 2008 or the cross plane 2009

hello friends
im planning on buyin the r1. im a little worried bout the heating issues.. i would not want to ve myself fried on long drives. but then again i dont ve a choice. with the budget of 8lak i guess r1 is the only legal bike i can get in tis country.(CORRECT ME IF IM WRONG)
so i want to kick out the debate which is running on every r1 rider'S MIND...

WHICH R1 IS BETTER THE 2008 R1 OR THE 2009 R1 WITH THE ADVANCED CROSS PLANE CRANK (WHICH RELEASED IN 2010 IN INDIA)

many detest the looks of the new r1. many say the new r1 looks absolutely fine and performs perfect.. but what bout the probs which the prev model had?? have they really been rectified??? is the new r1 just a face lift of the old r1 with some motogp crank??? or is it really a bike which could scare the other mortals out of its league?? is the new r1 really a bike worth going for or has it just given up to evolve into a better bike?

With your budget of 8L getting a 2010 R1 is out of the question (unless of course your getting it financed) You can get a well maintained Stock 2008 R1 for 7L-7.5L+ in Bangalore.

There are quite a few ownership and ride reports on both the bikes here.

2008 is a Hooligan. Handles well, but under hard runs can cause headshakes as the front gets very light as it's prone to power wheelies and wobbles a little due to uneven surfaces of the road in the lower gears but the steering damper on the bike does it's job well enough and once you get used to the way it handles you'll know what to do to ensure a smooth ride. Stable enough to be ridden hard at all speeds and around corners.

2010 does it better in all departments (sans the heat, top speed and weight) but handles extremely well and is more stable. 2010 has 3 modes which works to your advantage especially in the city. B mode makes it easy and fun to ride the bike in the city. It's heavier but feels light enough and can tackle corners at triple digits read 200+ with ease!

Make sure you inspect the bike thoroughly before you bike. It's service history, gather info on how it has been used and maintained by the owner. Any crashes and replacements/repairs on the same. Good luck with the purchase.

Regarding Heating:

There are no issues with the bike. The heating problem is there on all R1s and notable here on the 2008 and seemingly more on the 2010. It's not some kind of malfunction. Just that the deltabox heats and burns through your legs and 'private areas' and the underseat exhaust aids the heating process especially in slow moving city traffic. On the highways there's absolutely no issues. In my city in midst of summer I found 2010 to bet hotter than the 2008. Experiences can vary. But just FYI I've burnt the skin on my legs through my jeans a couple of times on the 2008.

A word of Caution:

If you've not ridden any SBK before or are clueless to the fact how insanely powerful they can be and this is your first one, go easy on the throttle, wear plenty of gear and don't ride on sand and always go easy on the throttle and avoid hard runs till you get used to the bike and the way it handles. If you are careless a liter class will throw you off the saddle before you know it.

P.S. Avoid taking pillions till your comfortable on the bike and those who don't understand your instructions on how to properly sit on the bike and hold on to it during accelerations and MOST IMPORTANTLY during braking. The moment they start sleeping on your back for support (and if they are heavy) your arms n back will be screwed.

On a personal note, I love the 08. But given a choice I'd buy the 2010. The crossplane works it's magic all too well and overall it's a great package. The bike may be down on power compared to it's rivals but holds it's own against them. A great bike to ride and Bangy weather should be easy on ya.

You can talk to some of the litre class owners here for a thorough review. These are just my impressions from having spent some 'considerable' time on these bikes.

If you are going for a new one. Please do consider the CBR 1000RR and refer TenHut's thread and Fireblah's thread. Another VFM bike without the heating problems and more user friendly compared to the R1.

@harishks01: If your budget is 8L, then 2010 R1 is way out of your budget. It would be very hard to source a secondhand seller. '10 R1 isn't just a facelift, it get's a whole new mill with cross-plane crank and uneven firing order to reduce internal torque. Several changes have been made to the frame and suspension to improve the handling! It's worth the buy!

But like Kwofist said, also explorer the competing 1000RR or the GSX-R 1000

@Kwofist: No offence, but bhwahahahha!! bhwhahahaha!! 'considerable' time.... bhwhahaha!!

I've said what the thread starter needed to know from own personal account and not some copy pasted info freely available on the internet.

No offence taken atleast not from someone who hasn't even ridden anything remotely close to a Litre class SBK.

@Harish: Be sure to check out the GSX-R1000 now that it's legally available.

Cheers!

@Kwofist: I didn't mean to offend you, you don't have to get personal. You think I haven't ridden a super bike, keep thinking that way. I have nothing to prove or brag about. Maybe because I don't go around flaunting and pasting images around the web.

For obvious intentions

How many of you super bike owners can take corners at 200kmph? Apparently some can, we need some help on taking corners

"Can tackle corners at triple digits read 200+ with ease"

I don't want to make things personal, and I don't really mean to retaliate, but I just want to rest my case on this one

bhwahhahaha!! LMAO!!

Hi Harish,

R1 isnt the only legal bike around. You get sbk's from honda and sizuki as well. The 2010 r1 would surely be out of your budget but im sure you'll get a good example of a 08 for 8L or less. I know a person in chennai who was selling off his 2010 1000rr for 9.5L nego. The bike had run less than 1k kms and the owner being a shippy didnt have time to ride it.

This happens with the 2010 as well and practiclly all the new-age litre class bikes and even some smaller ones. Its a known fact that under hard acceleration the front lifts and gets light.

You cant be serious! As per the owner you rode the bike a few days after he bought it. it had done just a few hundred kms at that point of time. Dont tell me you rode someone elses brand new bike at 200+kmph and even cornered on it! But seriously, could you please let me know where you found a corner good enough to take at 200+ in DK. We would love to take our bikes and cars there for some runs. Plus im sure the road is not a public road as we are all responsible people and we wouldnt try such speeds on public roads in DK. Oh wait! You probably rode it on some track. How silly of me! LOL

Very sound advice but again, its easier said than done! We know a chap in our town who convinced an old bloke to lend him his r1. He then started riding it around like the rear end was on fire and often updated his FB status msg to inform his friends that he popped a wheelie at 270 and how ridin around at 200+ the entire day was so much fun. He even had the audacity to break some stuff on the bike and keep mum about it. Finally a few weeks, a coupla 100's of kms, coupla burnouts, wheelies and a bald rear tyre later, the bike was returned to the owner following which he sold it. Now harish, this is just an example for you. The new owner would never get to hear what the bike has been through. All he would know is that its an official bike with a slight service history. So you'll need to do the background check and then make a move.

Ofcourse this coming from someone who rides and drives like its the end of the world. Not just on your own bikes and cars but those of your friends.

Well I understand your personal vendetta against me. But crap balling the thread with things right out of your imagination just to undermine me is not going to work. I was offered to ride the R1 a few times and I took it up. Gave it back to the owner the way it was given to me after a nice wash and a coat of polish and almost a year later wrote a ride impression about it here so please get your facts right!

That said I've known you long enough to realize that you just love to cough up a rant. So be it. I rest my case here.
