Default Time for a correction?

Over the last couple of months, I've been looking around at options for a used bike before I upgrade to a Hayabusa. The most obvious choice would be smaller cc sbk I felt.

However, the prices seem pretty ridiculous to me. Bikes that are 10 years old seem to be expecting more than 5 lakhs.

In the old days, this may have applied because these bikes had to be imported, lots of hassles and they were rare. The owners probably paid a bomb and are unwilling to believe that the bottom is dropping out of the market. But in the current scenario with brand new Harleys costing 5.5 lakhs and the new Honda 250 costing just 1.5 lakhs, it seems pretty stupid to expect the same price for a decade old, dodgy bike that's been ripped by at least 2-3 previous owners.

Is it just me, or does anyone else here also believe that it's time for a correction in used sbk prices?

No offense to anyone meant here. Just a general observation.

There is and will be a correction, as added benefits like, warranty, service, availability of spares, and ownership ( number of owners ) come into play.

But then wont this be running two markets parallel to each other?

The ones which are bought from a showroom, will continue to retain their value, while the ones which have been imported, will get cheaper in the same proportion, but retain value also???

Most definitely a huge correction will be seen in about one or one and half years time or by the time we can officially buy most leading big bikes.

Other than the warranty, service, spares etc., the ready availability of low cost finance will greatly tip the scales in favor of showroom bikes.

If I were to spend 5 Lacs on a used bike (which must have been abused and ridden hard, probably repaired with jugaad parts by semi skilled mechanics, might have been in bad accidents), I would not even blink once to put that 5 Lacs as down payment and take say another twenty odd thousand for 5 years in EMI for getting myself a new bike.

For a used bike, the maintenance hassle and frequent expenses alone will create justification for the EMI.

So, IMHO, if there isn't a huge correction in prices, it will be difficult to even find takers for such used bikes especially the grey bikes.

Another factor: I've heard from a friend that the Japs will also be going the CKD route in 2011. As this same person told me about the Harley CKD route much before it was officially announced, I'm inclined to believe him. Which means that soon all the Jap beauties will cost 25-30% less than at present. I guess it's only a matter of time before reality bites the second hand market.

if u've been quoted over 5 lac for a 10 year old litreclass u've been looking
in all the wrong places.

what bike/bikes are u looking for?

a used 600 costs around 4 to 4.5 lac
and a litreclass costs around 5 to 5.5 lac.

for post 2004 bikes that is.

yep, 600 cc should be like 4-4.5L and liter class should be max till 5.5L or 6L(which should be like touch wood condition) anything above 6L for a second hand bike is rip-off

Completely agree with your Opinion... I have also experienced same thing.. Even a 1998 CB 400 Super Four (Not even a Vtec)is quoted at 3.5L to 4L. .. In my opinion it should cost somewhere between 2.25 L and 2.5 L, if not less...

I hope the correction in the second hand market happen soon .. And sellers and agents come back from the wonderland.

Well if that happens in next one or two years, we are looking at a brand-spanking-new hayabusa or R1 at 8-9 Lacs.
That means about 3 Lacs in down payment + about 19k EMI (@ 8.5%) for 3 years.

This should work out to be a much sweeter deal compared to a (probably) grey bike at 4-5 Lacs, which is at least 4-5 years old. Even bikes bought from Indian Showrooms will correct in prices if major manufacturers go the CKD route.
