Default The cult of Harley Davidson

One of the most commonly taught case studies in Marketing is that of Harley Davidson. Whether or not you believe that their bikes are great there is no denying the greatness of the brand.

It is actually the only logo in the world that people actually tattoo themselves with (though I have seen a couple of Nike swooshes as well).

Apart from the bikes themselves and their rich American heritage, a big contributor to Harley's success over the years has been their advertising - most notably print advertising.

I thought to have a collection of some legendary HD ads. Ones that speak to the boy in every man.

So here they are. These have never failed to give me goosebumps. And I'm not even a Harley fan.

For sure. Btw, the one in the colours of the American flag was the ad they released when the company was in financial trouble and most people were predicting their demise. That's real attitude

In addition to ads, HD actually had become an icon post 1984 when the company took over the control from American Motor Group (I think it was the present VP Willie G Davidson). They found that most people love customizing their motorcycle & they decided to go the people's way by introducing the factory customs & started supplying a huge AM parts. Not sure if any other motorcycle has so much of parts to be customized in the world. A Harley was then made more of a life style than just a ride through HOG.

Their old models such as iron head & flat heads have a huge AM parts supplied by even third party vendors. But their current models such as 96B twin cam, V-Rod do not have much of third party AM suppliers, its only from the factory.

Thumbs up Live by It!

We believe in going our own way, no matter which way the rest of the world is going.
We believe in bucking the system that's built to smash individuals like bugs on the windshield.
Some of us believe in the man upstairs.
All of us believe in sticking into the man down here.
We believe in the sky and we don't believe in the sun.
We believe in freedom.
We believe in dust, tumbleweeds, buffalo, mountain ranges and riding off into the sunset.
We believe in saddlebags and we believe that cowboys had it right.
We believe in refusing to knuckle under to anyone.
We believe in wearing black because it doesn't show any dirt or weakness.
We believe the world is going soft but we're not going along with it.
We believe in motorcycle rallies that last a week.
We believe in roadside attractions, gas-station hot-dogs, and finding out what's over the next hill.
We believe in wrangling images, distance inside the garbage cans,
Fuels tanks designed in 1936.
Freight train sized headlights, chrome and custom-paint.
We believe in flames and skulls.
We believe life is what you make it, and we make it one hell of a ride.
We believe the machine you sit on can tell the world exactly where you stand.
We don't care what everyone else believes.
Amen!!!

This is one of the best Harley ads I've seen. A Television commercial, it is one that I saw among the firsts of my advertising career, and nothing till date has been able to impress and inspire me more. Do check out the video guys.

You see it, and you want to ride a Harley. Nothing more, nothing less!
