See, a genuine & valid Registration Certificate does NOT signify that the bike is legally imported. It maybe illegally imported too. ok?

Secondly, RTO can/will NOT help you. No use approaching them now. Who knows why they registered an illegally imported bike? It maybe due to negligence, ignorance of facts or maybe some bribery...(?) Only recently have they started asking for Invoice/ Bill, Import Documentation, etc.

Firstly, ask the owners directly. Some might clearly say their bikes are illegally imported. Those who claim they've paid tax, ask for the receipts and documentation.

Below is the official website of DRI. With the motorcycles' models, tax documentation, location & Reg. numbers noted, you can e-mail these people to ask them whether they're completely tax paid legal or not. They might help you:

YouCanHelp

And secondly, if you help confiscate a illegal Sbk through the first link, you can earn upto 20% its value. But don't do it. Why kill another biker's dreams, right?
Explore the above site for more info.

If these DRI people don't help you, you can go through RTI Act procedure which is also specified on the site, but leave it as the LAST option, ok? Good luck...

brother there no way you can check the bike legally from DRI people and if you write any mail to them first they will never reply as they are so busy & DRI never collect duty it actually collected by customs as i reside in Delhi i have seen each DRI office how they work & each customs office

Its OT, but if your looking to buy a used bike, I know of a zx12r which is supposed to have clean papers. I myself am looking to buy a used 600cc or litre class in Bangalore with clean papers. If you know any bike, then do let me know.

first things first

there is absolutely noway for you to know whether the bike is a legal import or not by just looking at the rto papers. that won't help.

the dri people also probably wouldn't be able to help you in this matter. only place is you contacting to customs. which is not easy and you can't go to them each time you get some deal. they won't really entertain anyone for such a minor thing.

anyway, here are my 2 cents

become friends with a dealer - i know it's gonna be like a goat becoming pally with a tiger - but you never know, if the chords strike they strike.
OR you can get in touch with any biker who has been buying these bikes and would actually care about the authenticity of papers and blah blah. i am sure there are quiet a few experts here.

just in case you are unable to do so, and still want someone to help you out, then do the following :
1. ask the seller to show you the bill of entry papers. also insist on he scanning and sending you all the relevant papers for the bike.
2. ask the seller to send you the pictures of the bike's chassis number, engine number and VIN number.
3. after you have received all these - you can either make some sense looking at them all - OR - you can write to me on info@7thgear.in : i can safely say i have almost seen it all. and i always endorse buying legitimate bikes. via showrooms, via dealers, or via me.

lemme know if you need any help
