Thanks Haroon. its really sad ...... personal effects 30% while the bike will be 100%. What if someone wants to get the bike down to India when on vacationa and if it would be taking it back when one leaves?

and what i could understand was that for a new vehicle a person needs to pay 114% duty on new vehicle.
60% is the duty for the vehicles brought in vi TR channel after showing the legitimate papers that the person who is getting the vehicles is shifting back to india. these vehicles need to be in the ownership of the person for atleast one year and the person can not sell it for next 2 years. for used vehicles the import duty is 180% and one can not import vehicles older than 3 years. while importing a new vehicle you are only allowed to import the vehicle from the country of origin - that is the country where the vehicle has been manufactured. if the vehicle is getting imported from some other country, then you are liable to pay about 25-50k as the penalty (i think it just depends on how much the official wants at that time - not aware of a strict guideline for it). |

What I posted in the link below is based on my direct conversation with the senior customs officer in the presence of my clearing agent in Cochin seaport (during my carnet importation in Dec 2010). So I am quoting directly from the customs officer. http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/584894-post7.html

so with that calculation a $10,000 R1 should not cost less than 15 lacs INR.
10,000 + 180% = $28,000 = Rs. 14 Lacs + Transportation (would be atleast 50k) + clearance + in-transit insurance etc. just went through this link, and it shows both of us are slightly off. check it out http://www.cbec.gov.in/customs/cst-2k11-12/chap-87.pdf but i might be wrong totally. have fixed a telecon with the officials for tomorrow. will record it and jot down all the details and then update it here. phew!!
confused yet again. spoke to a gentleman there and he says that the duty to import a new vehicle is a whooping 134%. old vehicles are not allowed in any circumstances other that TR. you can import a vehicle below 800cc with a proper permission as it is restricted otherwise. getting a permission he said is not that easy though. somehow not satisfied - need to get in touch with someone who is not in a hurry to keep the phone down AND who knows these things as good as back of his hand. |

Almost the same facts were told to me by the customs guy in cochin as well. He said it will work out to 140-150% (that includes certain percentage of education cess and certain percentage of some other govt levy). Thats why I said only a NRI can bring an older vehicle, while resident indians can only bring a new vehicle. At the end of the day it is one complicated, expensive & time consuming affair. Some of you active on Team-bhp would have seen this thread: Detailed info on importing a bike from USA - Team-BHP .
