I personally think that a 600 supersports is a better choice than the 1000 superbike, for the simple reason, there is no place, I repeat no place, where we can fully exploit the power of 1000 cc. And with a good rider, a 600 cc Supersports can actually beat a 1000 cc Superbike. Which is why, in more mature economies and countries, there are more 600CC RRs sold than 1000cc Superbikes. Another reason being, the 600cc Supersports has a smaller wheel base and is around 15 kilos lighter, making it one of the lightest usable motorbikes available on sale upwards of 500cc. The 600cc supersports weigh in the region of 160 kgs which is extremely light compared to normal street bikes of the same capacity which weigh some 20-40 kgs heavier. The smaller wheelbase combined with the light weight, make the 600cc supersports category one of the most nimble and easiest bikes to handle in traffic once we get the hang of it. No other bike in any category can even come close to the ease of maneuverability of the 600cc Supersports.
Good write-up overall, but there are couple that are incorrect or not covered.

1. Agility of the bike
2. Rider's height/weight
3. Skill set
4. Insurance premium
5. Track/Road use (600s are more fun on the track)

Fireblades are pretty nimble. Enough to feel like you're riding a 600 at times.

@^^^ they are 2 stroke bikes and they are not allowed in India due to emission laws . they are mostly sold in countries with restrictions on new riders where a learner can only ride smaller displacement bikes .

I don't know if this is the right place and it does not make sense to create a new thread for a question.

I don't think it makes sense to buy a brand new legal 1000cc bike and I don't see the government doing anything to reduce the customs duty, so the prices of the bikes will continue to remain astronomical.

Would 5-6L rupees in 3 years time be enough to buy a used legal bike?
I have recently seen a 2008 R1 being sold for around 8L and that bike had truck loads of after market parts.

I plan to buy one around end-2012. I know its a long way into the future but this will help me plan my finances properly.

Many thanks.

I am looking forward to responses to this as I am in a similar boat. Would a 2008+ official (showroom purchased) Hayabusa be available around 8L by end 2010 or 2011?

Also, what is the typical depreciation trend for these showroom purchased bikes? Going by Customs guidelines for used bikes, it should be around 16%, 12%, 10% for years 1, 2 & 3 respectively. Would this be a good benchmark?

What other factors come into play? Hiren pointed out after-market parts. Mileage and condition of the bike are also there (though I would have no clue how to judge a superbike's condition).

Thanks in advance for helping us out.

Condition of the bike, thats a very important point you raise.
I guess it will make sense to lurk around the ownership threads and see how the bikes fare in the next 1-2 years.

I can only hope that people who buy official bikes take good care of the bike, atleast the official bikes on xBHP are well cared for.
