Ducati 848 is a street bike, more for those people, who want to make a smooth entry into the Ducati Family. Mostly, because people criticize 1098 for being hyper-responsive in throttle and brakes, and expensive too.

It has a killer Torque curve, and it easily kills all the 600's, in torque or top power. See below:-->

and now, compare this with the 1000cc below:-->

Comparing it with 1000's is not really wise... or lesser money, the Litres will give better straight line performance compared to 848...

I want to repeat that Ducatis are lifestyle products.

None of the Duc SBKs are comfy. It has even more uncomfy ergonomics than the R6. The R6 is supposed to be very track focused and is the most uncomfy of the 4 japs. So is the 848. If you don't mind that, then the 848 is a good buy. Very street usable power thanks to the V-twin.
Although, id rather go for a liter bike form the Japs if i had that kind of money to spend. The Ducs are ridiculously expensive in India i heard.

Dang! I came here looking for a nice link to a comparo or something.

848 is the smaller version of the 1198 series. Difference between it and the Jap litres? Well, for starters, the R1s and their ilk are litre displacements and the Duc has 848 cubic cms. Its a twin, an L twin if I'm not mistaken, while the Japs (the ones we are talking of here) are all inline fours. The twin gives it the sweet torque curve as Samarth has shown above; thats the case with almost all the twins. They have awesome torque curves, and hence are great for street riding. The Duc 848 has around 248 more cc's than the Jap 600s in displacement, but traditionally its put in the same bracket as them as a twin needs to have more displacement to give the same power as the 600 (120-130 hp at the rear wheel).

The Duc is narrower than most of the of the Japs. Its got a rumbling sound as compared to the shrieking inline fours. It costs 3-4k USD more than the Jap 600s at ~13500 USD. Thats the price at which you can get a new R1. I am sure there are tons of other differences, but these are the major ones I guess.

Did I mention the Duc is a sweet, sweet, SWEET looking motorcycle? None of the Japs can hold a candle to its beauty.

yups the ducati's have way too aggressive riding postures, and 848 is no short in that...
and tht V twin is as good as the inline fours...

but japs can never make bike as sexy and exotic as these italians do...
but they cost almost thrice as the japs in INDIA....
